IMM 1294: Common Questions & Answers
UCI (universal client identification number)
- The 8 to 10 digit “Unique Client Identifier” number located on your study permit. It looks like this: 0000-0000 or 00-0000-0000.
- If you have never applied for an immigration document from Immigration Canada (IRCC), then you do not have a UCI number and should leave this part blank.

Duration of expected study
- Refer to McGill’s Key Academic Dates website for your “From” date.
- You should add the number of years that you expect it will take you to complete your program and indicate this as the “To” date.
The cost of my studies will be
- Tuition:
- Equals Total tuition + related fees for the next academic year (refer to McGill’s Fee Calculator for undergraduate and graduate students).
- If you are a graduate student, you can refer to your departmental offer letter for tuition and fees information (if your department has provided you with this information).
- If McGill has not yet released the Fee Calculator for your admission year/term, you can provide an approximate amount based on expected increases.
- “Room and Board” and “Other”:
- Indicate your estimated living expenses for your first year of studies.
- You can indicate an amount for living expenses in one of the sections and leave the other section blank.
- The amount should be at least the minimum required amount for living expenses in Quebec + roundtrip airfare + $500 to cover settlement fees for your first year of studies.
Funds available for my stay (CAD)
- Indicate the amount of funds available to you as per your financial capacity documents.
- This amount should be equal or greater to the sum of your tuition and living expenses – i.e., equal or greater to the sum of “Tuition” and “Room and Board” / “Other” sections.
My expenses in Canada will be paid by
- Indicate who will be paying for your studies in Canada.
- If you will be receiving loans, bursaries, scholarships or other funding from McGill or any other institution, select “Myself” in the drop-down menu.
- You are required to prove that you have sufficient financial capacity for only the first twelve months of your studies.
In addition to a study permit, are you also applying for a work permit? What type of work permit are you applying for?
- Answer “Yes” and select “Co-op Work Permit” only if you have a mandatory internship or work placement and want to apply for a Co-Op Work Permit.
If you have been issued a CAQ, provide the Certificate Number
- Use the number on your CAQ that begins with “C00”. The CAQ should be valid beyond the date your current study permit expires.
- If your CAQ expires on the same date as your study permit and you may not have your new CAQ before your study permit expires, contact ISS right away.

- Do Not leave this section blank.
- If you have no work history, indicate your studies or activities for the past 10 years.
- Do not leave any time gaps in this section.
