International postdoctoral fellows who hold a valid work permit for a period of at least 6 months qualify for the Québec's provincial health plan Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec(RAMQ).

They will be subject to a 3-month waiting period for the RAMQ benefits from the time their application is filed with the RAMQ office.
Health Coverage while waiting for RAMQ:
- During the 3-month waiting period, postdocs can not be covered by the International Health Insurance (IHI) plan.
- The current administrative structure of the International Health Insurance plan does not accommodate contracts that are 3-months or less.
- However, those who are in the 3-month waiting period or whose valid work permits are for less than 6 months can obtain temporary medical coverage.
- This temporary medical coverage can be purchased from a private insurer.
- A suggested private insurer is the Québec Medavie Blue Cross.
