How can ISS help you: 

ISS offers a host of services to international undergraduate and graduate degree students, exchange/visiting students, and other students who opt in to pay McGill Student Services fees. 

We strive to create a welcoming and respectful environment for everyone. Whether interacting in person, on the phone, or online, we ask that all communications remain courteous and considerate. 

If a situation becomes challenging and cannot be resolved respectfully, we may need to ask individuals to leave or end phone conversations to ensure the well-being of our community.

What we can do: 

• Provide support, advice and resources on applying for temporary immigration documents and maintaining student immigration status. 

• Advise on temporary immigration documents related to a student’s studies such as the CAQ, Study Permit, Co-op Work Permit, Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), Spousal Open Work Permit and Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). 

• Administer and provide support with International Health Insurance  

What we cannot do: 

• Advise on Permanent residency  

• Advise on Work permits besides the PGWP, Co-op work permit and Open Spousal Work permit 

• Advise post-doctorial candidates (please contact Academic Personnel Office for immigration advice) 

• Advise on non-Canadian immigration matters

• Complete and/or submit immigration applications on behalf of students 

• Expedite immigration applications

The International Student Services’ frontline staff can provide you with resources on how to get answers to your questions. The frontline staff cannot provide any advice on immigration matters over the phone or in person.  

Write to ISS

Current or prospective McGill students, parents, McGill staff, and others may contact our office in writing by filling out a Request for Information (RFI) webform. 

You will receive a response by email from an ISS staff member. If you do not have a McGill email address, or do not currently have access to it, please make sure to indicate an alternate email address when you fill out the webform. 

If you are seeking immigration advice, please make sure to be as detailed as possible about your situation, your questions and attach any pertinent supporting documents, so that our immigration advisors can best assist you. Please refrain from submitting a webform containing minimal information or requesting an appointment without specifying your inquiry. 

Your inquiry will be triaged and assessed for urgency. If we determine that your inquiry is urgent, we will do our best to respond within 3 business days.

International Health Insurance

Current or prospective McGill students, parents, McGill staff, and others may submit a ticket using the International Health Insurance Portal. 

McGill Students and Staff: please use your McGill credentials to sign-in. 

Non-McGill users: Please create an account to submit your ticket. 

Once your ticket has been responded to, the ticket will be closed by our team, and you will be notified via e-mail. If you have additional questions regarding the same inquiry, you may re-open the same ticket. If you have questions unrelated to your previous ticket, please submit a new one. 

Immigration Advising Appointments

Immigration Advising appointments can be offered to current degree-seeking McGill international students who pay student services fees. Students from the School of Continuing Studies, McGill staff and parents are not eligible to book Immigration Advising Appointments (including Rapid Advising).   

30 minute Immigration Advising Appointment (virtual or in person):  

If you are a degree-seeking McGill international student and you would like to meet with an immigration advisor for complex matters such as to review your application documents, or if you have been refused for an application and/or you are out of status, please follow these steps:  

1. Send a Request for Information (RFI) webform detailing your situation and include your specific questions. Please upload any relevant documents that you would like the advisor to see.  

2. Your Request form will be reviewed and triaged by a member of the ISS staff. Please note, not all requests for an appointment will be granted. Depending on the nature of your request, you may either receive a written response to your question(s) or a booking link to book a 30 minute appointment with an Immigration Advisor.   

3. The booking link will include instructions on how to log into the MyISS Student Portal, how to book a virtual or in-person appointment and how to upload your documents (if applicable).  

4. If you do need to upload documents for review, please upload them in the MyISS Student Portal at least 24 hours before your appointment in order to give the immigration advisor sufficient time to review. Please note, during peak periods, appointments may only be available within 1-2 weeks.  

5. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, you can do so up 24 hours before your appointment on the MyISS Student Portal. 

5-Minute Rapid Advising Appointments

Rapid Advising is a 5 minute Immigration Advising session for general and quick questions regarding temporary immigration matters (study, work and visitor documents). Our office does not advise on permanent residency (PR). If your case is complex please follow the steps above to book a 30 minute Immigration Advising Appointment.
