The Buddy Program

Make the transition to Montreal and McGill easier (and more fun) by joining the Buddy Program!

The Buddy program pairs new international students with current students who provide the friendly face, helping hand, and first Montreal friendship that can make a world of difference for new arrivals. Buddies can also offer linguistic support, cultural guidance and information about life at McGill.

Now in its 27th year, the Buddy Program has helped thousands of international students - over 900 last year - settle into McGill and Montreal.  Typical "buddy" activities might include:

  • showing students around campus
  • locating nearby banks and grocery stores
  • discussing Montreal neighbourhoods to help find an apartment
  • chatting over a cup of coffee

Volunteers and new students are paired on a rolling basis during the year, allowing new Fall students to be in touch with their buddies over the summer. There is no hard deadline for signing up, although it's important for both volunteers and new students to sign up before the term begins in order to ensure a smooth pairing.

“Being an International Buddy was one of the most rewarding opportunities at McGill. I experienced the excitement of Montreal all over again through another person's eyes, learned more about people from around the world and made lifelong friends.” - Azzura Lalani,  McGill Class of 2014
