COVID-19 Updates from International Student Services: JULY 2021:
            1. International students with a valid study permit (or approval letter) can travel to Canada (McGill is on the list of DLIs with an approved COVID-19 readiness plan).
            2. The 14-day quarantine is still required from ALL travellers entering Canada (even if vaccinated). However, as of July 5th, 2021 at 12:01am ET, fully vaccinated* travellers authorized to enter Canada by land or by air, will be exempt from the federal requirement to undergo a 14-day quarantine. Please note, the 14-day quarantine will continue to be required for all other travellers who do not meet the requirements to be considered fully vaccinated. See our Entering Canada page on Quarantine exemption for fully vaccinated travellers for all of the important details.
           3. Before making travel plans, please refer to McGill's quarantine resources and to our vaccination FAQs.

Please visit our COVID-19 page for additional news, resources, and FAQs.

The Buddy program pairs new international students with current students who provide a friendly face, helping hand, and first Montreal friendship that can make a world of difference for new arrivals. Buddies can also offer linguistic support, cultural guidance, and information about life at McGill.

Now celebrating its 33rd anniversary, the Buddy Program has helped thousands of international students settle into McGill and Montreal.  Typical "buddy" activities might include:

  • online face to face meetups using any platform (i.e. Zoom, Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp, Google Meet or Houseparty)
  • email or meet online to talk about courses, professors, campus life, clubs, etc.
  • online karaoke, Zumba, or videogames
  • chatting online over a cup of coffee or tea

Volunteers and new students are paired on a rolling basis during the summer, allowing new fall students to be in touch with their buddies over the summer. There is no hard deadline for signing up, although it's important for both volunteers and new students to sign up before the term begins in order to ensure a smooth pairing.

Student testimonies-

“I found that during the pandemic new students were more responsive to my emails and very happy to schedule zoom meetings with me. A lot of them couldn't get to Canada until only recently and were very anxious about starting a semester from far away. It was very rewarding for me to be there for them and even help them practice their English! It's so nice to meet students from so many different places, and I benefitted from it even more so now, that I have so little interaction with people. Definitely meets my expectations every semester!” - Winter 2021 Buddy volunteer

“I love being a buddy volunteer. I have volunteered for several semesters now and it is always a lovely and rewarding experience. Keep up the good work! Thank you!”- Winter 2021 Buddy volunteer
