  • Completion of minimum one semester at McGill
  • Completion of MUIN 282 or MUIN 283 with a minimum grade of A-; if you are planning on doing MUIN 282 or 283 in April, your application will still be considered on the condition that you are expected to pass this practical exam with the minimum required grade before starting the minor.
  • Minimum CGPA of 3.0
  • An audition may be requested by the Early Music Area based on a student’s prior engagement in Baroque Orchestra (MUEN 572), Cappella Antica (MUEN 572) or Early Music Ensemble (MUEN 580).

Audition

  • Students who are required to pass an audition will be informed before early March of the audition date.
  • For those who are required to audition, an audition fee will be charged. A current audition fee rate is found under Schulich School of Music fees on the Student Accounts website.
  • The audition will take place between February 24 and March 4, 2024.
  • For the audition, students are required to prepare a short selection of three contrasting works of choice (or sections of long words) composed before 1815. The total duration should be under 15 minutes. Students can play either on a historical instrument if they have one, or if they do not, on a modern instrument in a historically appropriate style.

Application

Interested students must submit an early music minor application between December 1 and February 15.

Application result is communicated by mid-March.

Successful applicants will have the minor added to their records as of early June after they have registered for at least one course in the following fall semester.
