Ensemble Activities for Winter 2021 (Undergraduate and Graduate students)
- Message from Prof. Stéphane Lemelin, Chair of the Performance Department about Winter 2021 Ensembles
- Winter 2021 list of ensembles
Due to COVID-19, most large ensembles will not be offered in the Fall term. This includes the McGill Symphony Orchestra, McGill Wind Orchestra, McGill Contemporary Ensemble, McGill Baroque Orchestra, and all choirs. Opera McGill and all jazz ensembles will be offered remotely. The School has developed a set of courses suited to each area that will enable students to actively engage with matters relating to ensemble playing and will allow students to maintain regular progression in their programs. Refer to these documents for information to determine which ensembles are running as well as course replacements:
About our ensembles
Ensembles are a vital component of the student experience at the Schulich School of Music. Each year, the School presents 700+ performances, including concerts by faculty, guest artists, students, and several exciting series featuring our large and small ensembles. The School offers a wide array of outstanding performance venues: from historic Pollack and Redpath Halls to modern Tanna Schulich Hall, the state-of-the-art Multimedia Room, and the recently renovated Clara Lichtenstein Hall, our facilities provide an ideal setting for music-making at the highest level.
The School’s offerings are comprehensive and range from Early Music to Jazz: the repertoire covered by our ensembles spans across masterworks of the symphonic literature to the intimacy of chamber music and includes some of the most exciting new music composed in our times.

Are you a Schulich School of Music student? Find your ensemble requirements & options on your program page.
Studying at McGill? All students at McGill University are eligible to audition for most ensembles, and priority is given to students pursuing a degree at the Schulich School of Music. Program restrictions may apply; please consult with your Faculty Advisor to determine whether you may enroll in an ensemble for credits towards your degree if you are not in a music program.
Not a McGill University student? Non-McGill students cannot participate in our ensembles, but through the McGill Conservatory you can get information about ensembles that are available for members of the community.
