In addition to programming over 600 public events each year on campus, the Schulich School of Music sponsors several community outreach organizations.
The McGill Conservatory
Our School's community outreach program, the McGill Conservatory has a mandate to provide quality musical education to Montreal community members of all ages and abililities. The Conservatory offers courses, camps, concerts and workshops across two locations in Montreal:
- Downtown Montreal in the Schulich School of Music's Strathcona Music Building
- The West Island on McGill's Macdonald Campus (4 Stewart Park)
Heart of the City
The Montreal Heart of the City Piano Program provides free piano lessons to children living in underprivileged areas by bringing volunteer teachers into elementary schools. Each child receives a private music lesson in their school once a week, and practices regularly. The space is equipped with headphones and keyboards. In addition to music lessons, the program organizers facilitate events to enrich musical appreciation, and learning in general, including free concerts and recitals. Children also have the opportunity to perform in front of an audience.
The Montreal New Horizons Band is a bilingual and intergenerational wind and percussion ensemble open to all that offers the opportunity to learn (or relearn) how to play a musical instrument in a friendly and dynamic environment. Watch video on YouTube.
