Transfer credits FAQ

Below are samples of the type of transfer credits a student generally receives based on the admission type. The number and type of transfer credits may differ from one student to another.

Transfer credits will only be granted upon provision of official transcripts with the most up-to-date records, and proof of completion of diploma (DEC, French Baccalaureate or International Baccalaureate).

No transfer credits are given for theory and musicianship courses completed at another college or university. Students who wish to seek exemption from first-year theory (MUTH 150, MUTH 151, MUJZ 160 or MUJZ 161) or musicianship (MUSP 123, MUSP 124, MUSP 140, MUSP 141, MUSP 170, MUSP 171, MUJZ 170 or MUJZ 171) are required take placement exams.

Please see below for answers to questions you may have according to your specific transfer category.

Transfer credits for:

Music History (MUHL 186 or MUJZ 187)

Western Musical Tradition (MUHL 186) 
Students who have successfully completed History I, II, III & IV from a Music DEC at CEGEP or post-secondary courses in Western Musical Traditions, or passed RCM Level 10 History exam, will be given transfer credits for MUHL 186 (determined by transcript record.) Students who have successfully completed the RCM Level 10 History Exam should email a copy of the official exam result to studentaffairs.music [at] mcgill.ca, including the McGill ID.

Jazz History Survey (MUJZ 187)
Students will receive transfer credits for this course if they have successfully completed an equivalent jazz history course from Cegep or college/university.

B.Mus. students who have completed one or two DECs from CEGEP

Students who completed a DEC will begin B.Mus. as a U1 student. U1 B.Mus. students generally receive these transfer credits.

One year of practical instruction:

MUIN 180 ( 3cr)

MUIN 181 (3 cr)

Music History:

MUHL 186 (3 cr) if successfully completed History I, II, III and IV from a Music DEC

Or MUJZ 187 (3 cr) if successfully completed Jazz History from a Music DEC

One year of ensembles:

MUEN 5XX (6 cr) – for B.Mus. students in a Performance Major

MUEN 5XX (4 cr) – for B.Mus. students with the following majors: Faculty, Faculty Jazz, Music Education, Composition, Music Theory, Music History

Electives:

Non-music electives (6 cr) if completed one DEC

Non-music/free electives (12 cr) if completed two DECs

B.Mus. students who completed a French or International Baccalaureate

Students who obtained a grade of 10 or higher in a French Baccalaureate in “premier groupe” in the examinations of Série L (Littéraire), Série ES (Économique et sociale) or Série S (Scientifique), or obtained an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, will generally begin B.Mus. as a U1 student.

One year of practical instruction:

MUIN 180 ( 3cr)

MUIN 181 (3 cr)

Music History:

MUHL 186 (3 cr) if successfully completed Western Music History from middle ages to modern times.

Or MUJZ 187 (3 cr) if successfully completed Jazz History

One year of ensembles:

MUEN 5XX (6 cr) – for B.Mus. students in a Performance Major

MUEN 5XX (4 cr) – for B.Mus. students with the following majors: Faculty, Faculty Jazz, Music Education, Composition, Music Theory, Music History

Electives:

Non-music electives (6 cr) for students who completed a French Baccalaureate

OR

Credits granted for IB Higher Level (HL) subjects passed with results of “5” or better. See McGill Prospective for IB subjects that qualify for transfer credits.

 

B.Mus. students who completed Advanced Placement (AP) exams

Students who receive more than 24 AP transfer credits will be considered a U1 student. Otherwise, you will begin B.Mus. as a U0 student.
Transfer credits are granted for subjects with AP exam results of “4” or better.

Transfer students to a B.Mus. program from another university or music conservatory

Students who completed a year or more from another university or music conservatory prior to McGill will begin B.Mus. as a U1 student.

One year of practical instruction:

MUIN 180 ( 3cr)

MUIN 181 (3 cr)

Music History*:

MUHL 186 (3 cr) if successfully completed Western Music History from middle ages to modern times.

Or MUJZ 187 (3 cr) if successfully completed Jazz History

One year of ensembles:

MUEN 5XX (6 cr) – for B.Mus. students in a Performance Major

MUEN 5XX (4 cr) – for B.Mus. students with the following majors: Faculty, Faculty Jazz, Music Education, Composition, Music Theory, Music History

Electives*:

Variable, depending on subjects.

L.Mus. students

If you have completed a B.Mus. prior to commencing the licentiate diploma, you will be exempt from the required history, theory and musicianship courses. If not, you may seek exemption from these courses by taking placement exams.

No transfer credits are given for practical instruction (MUIN courses) or ensembles (MUEN courses) for licentiate students.

When will I know which transfer credits I am getting?

You will receive a full report on your transfer credits, including the results from your placement exams, in your Program Audit (PA) sometime in August, before the start of classes. The transfer credits will also be reflected on your McGill transcripts in Minerva.

For a complete assessment of your transfer credits before the start of the semester, mail your official transcripts with final grades (including final grades for your recently completed winter semester) to Enrollment Services (see address below) . You must allow up to four weeks for your transcripts to be uploaded to your McGill records.
