Tabla Ensemble

Tabla workshop at McGill University's Schulich School of Music

Coordinator: shawn.mativetsky [at] mcgill.ca (Shawn Mativetsky)

Participation:This ensemble is open to all music students, and McGill University students from other faculties (with permission of the instructor; previous music experience is required).

Founded in 2005 by Shawn Mativetsky, the McGill Tabla Ensemble learns and performs traditional North Indian tabla compositions from the Benares baj (style). Students learn basic tabla techniques, repertoire, and performance practices, with the goal of developing advanced rhythm and improvisation skills, as well as an appreciation for North Indian classical music. Over the course of each semester, the group learns solo tabla repertoire, culminating in an Indian classical tabla soli performance.

The Tabla Ensemble is open to all students in the Schulich School of Music (priority is given to percussion and performance majors). Limited instruments are available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are interested in joining the ensemble, please contact Mr. Shawn Mativetsky for more information. For non-music students, permission is required before registering for the course. Unless graduating, all students should aim to register for both the fall and winter semesters.
