Brian Cherney appointed to the Order of Canada

Professor Brian Cherney has been appointed a Member of the Order of Canada (OOC)

Being recognized "for his lifelong devotion to Canadian music, as an internationally renowned composer, educator and scholar", the Schulich School of Music congratulates Prof. Brian Cherney for this momentous appointment to the Order of Canada.

About Brian Cherney

An impressive body of work spanning solo, chamber and orchestral repertoire, Brian Cherney has led an equally distinguished career in academia, teaching at Schulich since 1972. Former students, peers, and colleagues came together in 2017 to celebrate his compositions through a music conference devoted to his work: Illuminations: Brian Cherney at Seventy-Five.

"Professor Cherney is unparalleled among composition pedagogues in Canada in the success of his students who have gone on to establish major international careers both inside and outside academia."

Brian Cherney's music has been performed across the globe with numerous commissions for groups including Le Nouvel ensemble moderne (NEM), the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal (OSM), the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec and the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ).
