Inter-University Transfer Students

What to do now that you have been accepted to Desautels Faculty of Management from another University

Step 1 Official transcripts

Arrange for your final, official transcripts to be sent to admissions, including course outlines for University courses taken prior to McGill.

Step 2 Admissions determines if you are U0, U1 or U2

The Admissions office will decide your year (U0 [Freshman/Foundation Year], U1 [first year], U2 [second year]) depending on the number of credits you completed prior to McGill.  You may receive credit for Advanced standing if you did AP credits, French Baccalaureate, International Baccalaureate, German Abitur, A Levels or another accredited program.

You may also receive credit for the university course-work according to our policies for transfer of credits.  The Admissions office will grant you your first 30 credits including any Math exemptions and our office will assess any credits beyond this number.  It is important that you submit the course outline in Minerva for your MATH courses completed prior to McGill so that the Admissions office can grant you any MATH exemptions – which are prerequisites for some of the core curriculum.

Step 3  Submit Courses on the Course Equivalency System

To find out what you will receive credit for and which courses you may be exempt from at McGill you will need to visit the McGill Course Equivalency System.  You will verify if the courses you have taken at your previous university have already been reviewed and are in the database. This process sometimes takes a while

Keep track of those courses that have been evaluated already and the course exemptions you may expect to receive.

If the courses you took are not listed you must submit your course for review by following these steps:

1. Login on the Course Equivalency System
2. Click "Home"
3. Click on "Submit New Request"
4. Upload your course outline/syllabi as a PDF.
5. You will receive email responses with the result of the review of your courses for each submission to your mail.mcgill.ca

Each course outline MUST include the following:

1. Thorough description
2. Breakdown of topics covered
3. Method of evaluation
4. Course Materials (books/articles etc.) used
5. Credit weight and/or hours

Step 4 Consult the BCom website

Consult our BCom website to plan your registration.

Step 5 Register for courses

Register for courses. If you did not take Management courses prior to McGill you will begin by taking the core curriculum.  If you did some Management courses before starting in the BCom program, you will use the course equivalency database to see if they are equivalent to any of our courses and whether you need to repeat the course here or not.  You can change your registration up until the end of the add/drop (course change) period in the first weeks of class in each term.  Register to the best of your ability now.  If a class you need to take is full, don’t worry an advisor in the BCom office can register you, as needed.  Don’t worry that you will not get the courses you need.

BCom students usually take 5 courses per term.

Step 6  Attend Orientation

Attend Orientation and Advising events in August. Information is included in the registration guide provided above.  Consult with an bcom.mgmt [at] mcgill.ca (subject: New%20Inter-University%20Transfer%20Student) (advisor in the BCom office )when you arrive in Montreal to finalize your registration and to proceed with your transfer of credits.

At your first meeting with the BCom advisor you will review the credits you are receiving for your transfer and map out the remaining credits and what will be required of you to complete your BCom degree.
