Math Requirements for BCom Students

Depending on your previous education and your BCom program selection, you will need to take 1, 2 or 3 math courses for your BCom degree. Some students may not need to take any math courses at McGill (i.e. students from Quebec CEGEP or Quebec French Baccalaureate).

All students are required to take a CALCULUS course and a LINEAR ALGEBRA course requirement if they have not been granted credit for these courses upon admission.

If you receive credit for MATH 140 before starting at McGill or you know that you are expected to receive credit, you cannot take MATH 122; if you do it will be excluded from your credits and GPA. Consult an Academic Advisor for more detailed information as well as the Transfer Credit & Advanced Standing.

Students are responsible for checking the link above during the registration period and before the end of the add-drop period. They are responsible for ensuring they are registered in the correct math courses, that they are not missing Math requirements and that they are not taking repeated or overlapping MATH courses that will be excluded from their credits and GPA.

If students are registered in repeated or overlapping courses after the add-drop deadline, for example are in MATH 122 when they received credits and exemption from MATH 140, their options are:

  • to withdraw from the course before the withdrawal with refund or withdrawal without refund deadlines or
  • remain in the course and it will be excluded from their GPA and credits and the grade will show on their transcript.

Replacement courses

If you plan on pursuing one of the following programs, you will need to take MATH 140, MATH 141and MATH 133 (if you have not been granted these specific math courses upon admission):

* MATH 141 counts as an elective.

Students wishing to pursue any of the above-mentioned majors/minors should consult with an academic advisor in order to ensure this is a good fit for you, as well as the departmental advisor in Math for advising about the MATH courses in the Major program.

Computer Science Minor Concentration: MATH 140, MATH 141, and MATH 133 are required for some complementary courses in this minor. Students should consult a departmental advisor in Computer Science for further information and academic advising.
