Institute for Transforming Healthcare
Addressing critical management and organizational challenges to improve healthcare for millions of Canadians
The Institute for Transforming Healthcare (ITH)* mobilizes McGill’s expertise in management, medicine and public policy to address Canada’s most pressing healthcare system challenges.
Through real‑world research, stakeholder convening and evidence‑based policy development, the Institute works to improve access, coordination and outcomes for Canadians.
Backed by $5.75 million in donor support, thanks to support from Power Corporation of Canada, Canada Life, and Investors Group Inc., the Institute is a crosssector collaborative effort that unites McGill’s Desautels Faculty of Management, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and the Max Bell School of Public Policy, alongside healthcare institutions and government partners.
To improve the lives of millions of Canadians by transforming how healthcare is organized, coordinated and delivered through realworld research, collaboration and evidence based innovation.
McGill University, in collaboration with healthcare institutions, government partners and the broader healthcare innovation ecosystem, will address our key areas of investigation through leveraging competencies at the intersection of research and practice.
Canada’s primary care system is strained, leaving many without timely access to a family physician and other health practitioners.
We will study the organizational, technological and coordination barriers that prevent patients from entering the system smoothly and consistently.
Surgical delays are often rooted not in clinical limits, but in coordination, resource allocation and workflow issues.
We aim to investigate how operating rooms, recovery units and clinical teams operate together to prevent cancellations and reduce delays.
Emergency departments face chronic overcrowding and long wait times causing several system pressures.
We will explore how patients move through and out of the ED to improve flow and reduce congestion.
*The ITH received provisional status as a research institute on November 13, 2025.
