Congratulations to Jui Ramaprasad, Associate Professor of Information Systems, and Alain Pinsonneault, Professor of Information Systems, awarded the 2018 SSHRC Insight Grant “Examining Value Creation in the Digital Economy: A Platform Engagement Perspective”.
While organizations see the need to participate in the digital marketplace to remain competitive, knowing how to design an effective digital strategy is challenging. Instead, we observe firms trying and failing, or trying and adjusting, uncertain of how to develop their digital strategy. The research conducted under this grant will provide insight into developing a monetizable digital platform strategy, with a focus on firms that facilitate the distribution and consumption of digital goods (e.g. music, movies, newspapers), by providing a comprehensive understanding of one aspect that we suggest is a critical, yet not yet well-understood piece in finding success: digital platform engagement. Drawing on the framework of multi-sided platforms, we will start with developing a coherent definition and typology of engagement in digital platforms, next we will investigate the relationship between the types and levels of platform engagement and monetization, and finally we will examine the technological features that can motivate platform engagement.
