In this mini workshop, for Black History Month, the West-Can group has condensed a few elements of their larger workshop series into an exciting hour and a half experience where their experienced instructors will guide participants through the history of carnival, the creative process of costume making and some of the rhythms, techniques and movements which inspire the composition of soca and calypso music.
Have you ever wanted to craft your own carnival headpiece? Now you have the chance! Participants will have the opportunity to create their own headpiece so advanced registration is required so the team knows how many items they need to prepare. Please register early as there will be limited spots!

About West-Can Folk Performing Group
West-Can Folk Performing Company has been in existence since 1978, specializing in Caribbean folk dance, drum, songs and storytelling. Their interactive and educational workshops are a blend of theory and practical, and are designed to be both fun and engaging. Through call and response and the exploration of the history of Caribbean dance and culture, participants have the opportunity to learn about and appreciate a culture that may be different from their own. West-Can has been showcasing and sharing Caribbean culture for over 40 years, and their workshops are a great way to increase cultural understanding and reduce discrimination through the use of Caribbean folk arts.
