A Killam Institution

The Neuro is proud to be a Killam Institution, supported by the Killam Trusts. In 1966, the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Endowment Fund and Fund for Advanced Studies were established at the Montreal Neurological Institute through the bequest of Dorothy Johnston Killam. These funds support the academic and training mission of the Institute, and are invaluable to advancing our work in neuroscience.

Funding for the Killam Trusts came from eminent Canadian financier Izaak Walton Killam (1855-1955) and his wife Dorothy Johnston Killam (1900-1965). The fund is now valued at nearly $500 million. Since 1965, the Killam Trusts have supported upwards of 8000 fellowships and scholarships, and awarded more than 150 Killam Prizes, which are among Canada's most prestigious awards for lifetime achievement in Health Sciences, Natural Sciences, Engineering, Social Sciences and Humanities. The other Killam institutions are Dalhousie University, the University of Alberta, the University of British Columbia, and the University of Calgary. The Killam Prizes formerly managed by the Canada Council for the Arts are now part of the National Killam Program administered by the National Research Council Canada.

The Neuro bestows the prestigious title of Killam professor to three faculty members (two currently named):

Killam Scholars

Recognizing the contribution of the Killam Trusts to our academic mission, The Neuro selects junior and senior faculty members to be honored as Killam Scholars for a period of five years.

Dorothy J Killam Lecture

Inaugurated in 2004, the Dorothy J. Killam Lecture recognizes the achievements of women in academia and science.

Killam Seminars

The Killam Seminar Series hosts internationally recognized scientists at The Neuro. This series brings the world's most prominent and productive scientists into the lecture hall and labs with Neuro scientists and young trainees.

Killam Fellow's Prize

The Neuro awards the annual Killam Fellow's Prize to a trainee for outstanding research presented on Fellows Day.
