Elinor Frey

Elinor Frey est une violoncelliste, gambiste et chercheuse canado-américaine. Ses enregistrements sur l’etiquette belge Passacaille et etiquette canadienne Analekta – la plupart des premières mondiales – sont le fruit de longues collaborations avec des artistes tels que Suzie LeBlanc, Marc Vanscheeuwijck et Lorenzo Ghielmi, ainsi qu'avec des compositeurs tels que Maxime McKinley, Linda Catlin Smith, Christian Mason, et Lisa Streich. Elinor Frey est lauréate d’un Diapason d’Or pour son enregistrement des sonates de Giuseppe Clemente Dall’Abaco, et ses éditions critiques des œuvres pour violoncelle de Dall’Abaco sont publiées en collaboration avec Edition Walhall. Son album “Concertos italiens baroques pour violoncelle”, une collaboration avec l'orchestre Rosa Barocca, a gagné un prix Juno en 2023 pour l'album classique de l'année (petit ensemble).

Elinor est la directrice artistique de l'Accademia de' Dissonanti, une organisation pour la performance et la recherche, et au cours des dernières saisons, elle s’est produite en concert dans toute l'Amérique et en Europe en récital et avec de nombreux ensembles de musique de chambre et orchestres (Constantinople, Les idées heureuses, Pacific Baroque Orchestra, Il Gardellino, Tafelmusik, etc.). En mars 2023, elle a interprété les concertos de Boccherini et de Sammartini en Australie avec l'Australian Brandenburg Orchestra.

Lauréate du prix Opus de l’interprète de l’année en 2021, Elinor Frey a entre autres bénéficié de la bourse américaine US-Italy Fulbright Fellowship ainsi que de bourses du Conseil de recherche en sciences humaines (CRSH) et du Conseil des arts du Canada, et une récente résidence de recherche à l'Institut Orpheus à Gand, lui permettant de poursuivre ses travaux sur la musique ancienne pour violoncelle. Elinor Frey a obtenu un doctorat en musique de l’Université McGill et est également diplômée du Mannes College of Music et de la Juilliard School. Elle est professeure de violoncelle baroque à l’Université McGill et l’Université de Montréal et chercheuse invitée en musique (2020-2023) à Lady Margaret Hall, Université d’Oxford.

Elinor Frey is a leading Canadian-American cellist, gambist, and researcher. Her albums on the Belgian label Passacaille and Canadian label Analekta – many of which are world premiere recordings – are the fruit of long collaborations with artists such as Suzie LeBlanc, Marc Vanscheeuwijck, and Lorenzo Ghielmi, as well as with composers including Maxime McKinley, Linda Catlin Smith, Christian Mason, and Lisa Streich. Elinor’s recording of cello sonatas by Giuseppe Clemente Dall’Abaco received a Diapason d’Or and her critical editions of Dall’Abaco’s cello music is published in collaboration with Walhall Editions. Early Italian Cello Concertos, her album in collaboration with Rosa Barocca orchestra, won the 2023 JUNO Award for Classical Album of the Year (small ensemble).

Elinor is the artistic director of Accademia de’ Dissonanti, an organization for performance and research, and she has performed throughout the Americas and in Europe in recital and with numerous chamber ensembles and orchestras (Constantinople, Les idées heureuses, Il Gardellino, Tafelmusik, Pacific Baroque Orchestra, etc.). Recipient of dozens of grants and prizes supporting performance and research, including the US-Italy Fulbright Fellowship (studying with Paolo Beschi in Como, Italy) and a recent research residency at the Orpheus Institute in Ghent, Elinor holds degrees from McGill, Mannes, and Juilliard. She teaches Baroque cello and performance practice at McGill University and the Université de Montréal and is a Visiting Fellow in Music (2020–2023) at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University. Frey was awarded Québec’s Opus Prize for “Performer of the Year” in 2021.
