Biography: 

Dr. Mehmet Gumus is Professor of Operations Management at the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University. He joined McGill in 2007 from the University of California at Berkeley where he completed his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research and M.A. in Economics. In his research, Dr. Mehmet Gumus explores the impact of customer behavior and information asymmetry on supply chain management, dynamic pricing, and risk management. His papers are accepted for publication in Management Science, Operations Research, Manufacturing and Service Operations Management, Marketing Science and Production and Operations Management.

Description

Use of up-to-date statistical analysis to extract information from a set of data, including the application and interpretation of results rather than on formal statistical theory; the challenge will be in the selection of the appropriate statistical methodology to address the problem and the limitations. The social aspects of statistical analysis, the ethical implications of data collection, privacy concerns, and the potential impact of statistical results on different societal groups.

Introduction to the fundamental decisions and trade-offs associated with the management of a firm's production and service activities. A study of how production and service systems can be effectively designed, utilized and managed in order for them to compete successfully on the basis of different parameters. Analyzing and optimizing production and service processes to minimize waste, reduce carbon emissions to achieve net-zero impact, and enhance resource efficiency. Exploring emerging trends and innovative approaches in sustainable operations, including the use of digital technologies, data analytics to ensure competitiveness while contributing to a more socially responsible business environment.

Description

This course consists of two parts: (i) The first half of the course focuses on probabilistic and statistical foundations of data analytics. At the end of this part, students will have the mathematical knowledge in following topics: probabilities, random variables, the Central Limit Theorem; prior and posterior distributions, and Bayes’ rule; correlation, and Sampling. (ii) The second half of the course focuses on mathematical foundations of decision analytics. At the end of this part, students will have the mathematical knowledge in following topics: linear algebra; calculus of several variables; convexity; separating hyperplanes; unconstrained and constrained optimization; lagrange multipliers.

Description

The goal is to evaluate quantitative information and to make sound decisions in complex situations. The course provides a foundation for various models of uncertainty, techniques for interpreting data and many decision making approaches in both deterministic and stochastic environments.
  • This course will be held on April 17, 18, 19, 24, 25 & 26, and will have the final exam on May 30, 2015.
