Anil Gondi (BCom’98) with BCom Honours in investment Management and Master of Management in Finance students after a roundtable discussion (October 2019)
“In the past 48 hours, I’ve spoken to three or four of my former classmates from Desautels,” said Anil Gondi (BCom’98). “They’re like family to me. These relationships opened doors for me early on, and I continue to leverage them.” In the transition from investment banking to managing a hedge fund in New York, Anil has relied on his former classmates for support and advice.
In 2018, Anil established the Anil Gondi BCom Scholarship as a way of investing in current Desautels students, as his classmates invested in him. “It was the mentorship component that interested me most,” said Shelly Qian (BCom’21), the first recipient of the scholarship. “I saw an opportunity to learn from someone who has walked the same path and succeeded.” Although she’s not quite halfway through her second year of the BCom program, Shelly has already benefited from Anil’s mentorship.
“Receiving this scholarship has made an enormous impact on me,” said Shelly. “Anil provided me with insights about options that finance students don’t even know they have. When I shared my interest in the technology, media, and telecom (TMT) sector, he put me in contact with someone at an investment bank in New York that focuses on TMT. I just signed an offer for a summer internship.”
“Shelly has been fantastic at reaching out and utilizing me as much as possible,” said Anil. Through the scholarship he created, Anil aspires to contribute more than financial support. He hopes to draw the next generation of McGill students into the network of relationships that has propelled him forward. “So far, it’s going incredibly well,” he said.
