MDIIM Faculty Fellow Awarded Grant to Study Flow of Emergency Department Patients through the Continuum of Care

Published: 5 May 2015

The Marcel Desautels Institute for Integrated Management (MDIIM) would like to congratulate Professor Beste Kucukyazici on her successful application to FRQS - Programme de subvention - Recherches sur l’urgence et le continuum des soins, for her project entitled “Recherchez au-delà des murs de l'unité d'urgence pour les facteurs de retards dans l'unité d'urgence: Modélisation des associations avec l'hôpital et les soins post-aigus et exploration d’interventions prometteuses”.

The project aims to assist policy makers and hospital administrators and proposes a comprehensive and jurisdictional approach for studying the problems impacting the flow of Emergency Department (ED) patients through the continuum of care, including hospital acute and post-acute care. The study will quantify the severity of all delays in ED patient flow and define their relative importance. It will then examine whether these delays vary significantly for different groups of patients and the relationships between these delays and patient outcomes. Finally, a decision support tool will be developed by taking advantage of detailed patient flow data to explore how a variety of interventions might improve the timeliness of care by reducing these delays.

The MDIIM is proud to have contributed to this proposal by supporting its development through the Faculty Fellows Program.
