Prof. Sebastien Betermier weighs in on Canada's $1-trillion investment push ahead of Carney summit

Published: 9 September 2026

As Ottawa prepares to host its first-ever Canada Investment Summit this month, questions remain about whether the federal government can deliver on Prime Minister Mark Carney's pledge to catalyze $1 trillion in investment over five years. In a recent article for The Hub, Sebastien Betermier, Associate Professor of Finance offered his perspective on what it will take to convince major investors that Canada is truly "investible."

Betermier pointed to the growing trend of Canadian pension funds acquiring airports, ports, and rail assets abroad while finding fewer comparable opportunities at home and described the conditions large institutional and sovereign wealth investors require as the "investible window." Asked whether Ottawa's Major Projects Office has succeeded in cutting through the regulatory delays it was designed to address, he was candid: it's simply too early to tell.
