
Encouraging a transformational shift towards Open Science requires a strategic effort and incentives on multiple levels. This series of internal awards from the Tanenbaum Open Science Institute (TOSI) recognizes the researchers and teams who are prioritizing Open Science practices, hoping to inspire their peers and foster an entire community of practice.
These awards are open to Neuro researchers, staff, graduate trainees and undergraduate students to encourage Open Science at all levels.

Open Science Leadership Awards for Principal Investigators
About
The TOSI Leadership Awards recognize principal investigators (PI) at The Neuro leading Open Science activities. This award aims to incentivize sustained Open Science practices in research laboratories at The Neuro and showcase PIs actively working to advance Open Science in neuroscience.
Value
Two awards of CAD 10 000 each. Each award comprises CAD 9 000 in unrestricted funds and CAD 1 000 in cash award.
Eligibility and Conditions
- This award is open to PIs based at The Neuro.
- Award recipients may be asked to contribute to efforts to spread/build Open Science practices in the Neuro community and offer advice to others when relevant to their expertise, and participate in community events. Awardees may be asked to present at Open Science or other related events.
- Successful application statements may be made publicly available.
Submission
The application must include:
- A one-page statement clearly indicating current and future activities that the applicant has been leading and how this is supporting sustained Open Science practices at The Neuro. Award recipients' application statement may be made publicly available. Please use the application template

- A letter of support from a referee who can speak to your Open Science activities, and who is not based at The Neuro.

- Evidence of existing impact on Open Science practices at The Neuro.
- Clear scalability and/or sustainability plans.
- Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) criteria play a positive role in the selection process.

Open Science Champions Awards for Research Staff
About
The TOSI Open Science Champions Awards recognize personnel in any lab or clinic at The Neuro leading Open Science activities. We welcome applications from research associates, research assistants, lab managers, technicians and other research personnel overseeing lab activities. These awards aim to ensure sustained integration of Open Science practices in each lab, and help encourage and motivate labs to sustain long term cultural change.
Value
Four awards, each CAD 2 000 in cash award for a total envelope of CAD 8 000.
Eligibility and Conditions
- This award is open to members of the research staff working under the supervision of a Principal Investigator (PI) based at The Neuro.
- Award recipients may be asked to contribute to efforts to spread/build Open Science practices in the Neuro community and offer advice to others when relevant to their expertise, and participate in Open Science community events. Award recipients may be asked to present at Open Science or other related events.

The application must include:

Hatrock Awards for Open Methods Development
About
The TOSI Hatrock Awards recognize trainees with a proven record in developing Open Science enabling methods and tools. Dale Hatrock was a graduate student in the Integrated Program in Neuroscience who passed away in 2021. Dale was passionate about developing methods and experimental protocols that enabled others to answer their research questions using the most advanced and technically-sound approaches. Dale was also highly committed to openly communicating his ideas so that his colleagues could learn, replicate, and build upon his rigorous methods.
Value
One award of CAD 1 000 in the form of a cash award to the winning Hatrock Award recipient. Two awards of CAD 500 each will be given to the top two runners-up for the award.

- This award is open to graduate students and post-doctoral fellows working under the supervision of a principal investigator based at The Neuro.
- Award recipients may be asked to contribute to efforts to spread/build Open Science practices in the Neuro community and offer advice to others when relevant to their expertise, and participate in Open Science community events. Open Science Launchpad Awards for Undergraduate Internships
About
The Tanenbaum Open Science Institute (TOSI) Launchpad Awards will support the scientific careers of McGill undergraduate researchers planning to work at The Neuro by providing internship funding for research projects in line with Open Science principles. These awards will support the training of undergraduate researchers on how to implement Open Science practices. We aim to inspire and motivate the most junior changemakers in our community to support long term cultural change towards Open Neuroscience.
Value
Four awards of CAD 5 000 for a total envelope of CAD 20 000.
The funds are provided for a 10-week full-time research internship, or equivalent. The funds will be administered by the principal investigator (PI). Allocation and internship timeline are flexible and to be determined by the applicant and the PI. For example, the internship may comprise 10 consecutive full-time weeks over the summer, or a combination of full-time weeks in the summer and part-time work during the following Fall semester.
Eligibility and Conditions
- This award is open to McGill Undergraduate students planning a research internship at The Neuro, under the supervision of a PI based at The Neuro or other lab members (research associate/assistants, lab managers, graduate students or post-doctoral fellows).
- All outputs of initiatives supported by TOSI funds must be released as openly as practically possible.

- A one-page statement written in collaboration with the PI, clearly indicating future activities that the applicant will be involved with and how this is supporting sustained Open Science practices at The Neuro. - Potential to make a concrete impact on the practice of Open Science at The Neuro.
- Evidence of existing interest in Open Science related activities (outreach, teaching) or skills related to Open Science activities (e.g., publishing, programming, communications) and scalability plan will be considered in the selection process.
- Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) criteria play a positive role in the selection process.

- Lead an open science effort to map neurotransmitter receptors to the human brain
