Library use policy

Find your Zone!

To preserve a clean and welcoming environment for research and study, a library use policy was established for the Humanities and Social Sciences Library. This policy was developed based on user feedback and extensive consultation with university stakeholders.

  • As of now, the entire 1st floor of the McLennan-Redpath complex is designated a Conversation Zone, where quiet conversations and videoconferencing are allowed (earbuds/earphones are required).
  • The Redpath Library Building Cyberthèque is a Zoom Zone, where students can participate in oral discussions while attending their online classes (earbuds/earphones are required).
  • The other floors of the McLennan-Redpath complex are only available for quiet individual study. Conversation and other noise-making activities are not allowed in these areas; cellphones should be silenced.
  • Food and drink: Reusable water bottles or other sealed drink containers are permitted in Library spaces. Water fountains are available throughout the building. At present, food is not permitted in the Library.

General Library use

The McLennan Lobby is the home of the library’s main service point. Please respect users that are consulting with staff in this area by moving to a Conversation Zone for a Skype or telephone call.

Please note:

  • The cafeteria on the Redpath Street level is the space to purchase meals and hot foods.
  • The selling or distribution of food or beverages is not permitted.
  • Having restaurant food delivered to the library is not permitted.
  • Library users are not permitted to save seats for others.
  • Mobile devices should be silenced throughout the library.
  • E-cigarettes and vaporizers are not permitted anywhere in the library.
  • Unattended personal belongings may be removed by Security.
  • Users who do not comply with the Library Space policy and who do not use bins to clean up will be required to leave.
  • Drives (food, clothing, hygiene products, other items or books) are not permitted anywhere in the library.
  • Canvassing, soliciting, or surveying library patrons is not permitted.
