A different kind of MOOC

The Desautels Faculty of Management launched a world’s first on September 16, coining a new word in the process. According to the people who put the course together, “Social Learning for Social Impact” is the very first GROOC (Group MOOC), a new massive open online course that’s designed to foster social collaboration, interaction and learning.

The course is taught by its co-creators, John Cleghorn Professor of Management Studies Henry Mintzberg, BEng’61, Desautels faculty lecturer Leslie Breitner, Teaching and Learning Services senior project manager Anita Nowak, BCom’97, PhD’11, and Desautels PhD candidate Carlos Rueda, a former political adviser to the Peruvian government. The course, which is the product of a two-year design and development process, has attracted about 7,000 learners from 162 different countries.
