New WiFi access to McGill network from MUHC
One of the IT challenges over the past years has been providing access to McGill resources to students, faculty and staff working at the MUHC (McGill University Health Centre). The Ministry of Health regulations concerning the interconnection of networks are extremely restrictive and complex.
Now, as of March 1, 2012, there is finally a viable solution. During the fall, MUHC worked closely with McGill’s Network and Communications Services (NCS) piloting a solution that uses both institutions' wireless networks. After the successful pilot, they are ready to deploy this solution.
How to connect
Users must have a valid McGill Username and McGill Password and need to configure their device to connect the WiFi access point from the MUHC, with SSID: CUSM-MUHC.MCGILL.CA.
You can find configuration instructions for various devices under the heading "Set up a wireless connection" in the IT Knowledge Base service description for Wireless Network Connectivity.
When connecting, users will need to enter their McGill Username (firstname [dot] lastname [at] mcgill [dot] ca or firstname [dot] lastname [at] mail [dot] mcgill [dot] ca) and McGill Password, just as they would when connecting to the McGill wireless network on campus.
The IS Service desk of the MUHC will not provide user support for this service. McGill University IT Customer Services (ICS) will assist users with basic connectivity issues, including configuring the network connection and verifying your McGill Username credentials. For hands-on support, come to the ICS Walk-in Support Office at 688 Sherbrooke West, room 285. ICS Service Desk support hours can be found at: http://kb.mcgill.ca/it/servicedesk.
Comments or suggestions on this service may be sent to the MUHC by email at: wifi [at] muhc [dot] mcgill [dot] ca.
A map of WiFi coverage at the MUHC is available at:
Many additional areas will be added over the next few months.
The MUHC will soon be implementing public WiFi access for users who do not have a network account at McGill. However, if you have a McGill Username, we recommend using the SSID "CUSM-MUHC.MCGILL.CA" because the bandwidth on the University’s wireless network provides faster connectivity and this connection allows complete access to all McGill services.
This deployment is only possible because of a very close collaboration between the IT administration of both our institutions and demonstrates our mutual commitment to providing the best possible services to our common customers.
