Rise of the Machines: Enhancing Brain Tumor Diagnostics Using Machine Learning

Abstract: Recent advances in molecular technologies have revolutionized our approach to tumor classification, moving beyond traditional histopathological features to incorporate rich molecular signatures. We leverage machine learning techniques applied to high-dimensional genomic data to enhance tumor classification and improve risk stratification. These approaches have driven discovery of novel drivers of human brain tumors and expanded our understanding of tumor heterogeneity. This evolution in tumor classification has not only advanced our basic understanding of cancer biology but has led to novel personalized therapeutic strategies in clinical trials.

Headshot portrait of BrentDr. Brent Orr MD, PhD is a Member in the Department of Pathology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He is the Division Director for Anatomic Pathology and Neuropathology. His research laboratory is focused on molecular classification of pediatric brain and solid tumors. He serves as the pathology lead on multiple clinical trials, including both recurrent and frontline trials for embryonal brain tumors such as medulloblastoma and atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors. Dr. Orr serves on the steering committee for Consortium to Inform Molecular and Practical Approaches to CNS Tumor Taxonomy (cIMPACT-NOW) and was a contributing author for the 5th Editions of the WHO Classification of Tumours of the Central Nervous System and Paediatric Tumours books.
