Abstract

Data, information, and insights are keys to transformation at scale for systems as complex and dynamic as food systems. So are the indices, incentives and governance models that guides actors from farm to manufacture, to store shelf, to home, in their willingness and ability to share and use the data in their everyday operation and longer term decision. In addition, food at the convergence innovation sweet spot needs to combine nutritional quality, safety, affordability, acceptability, convenience, sustainable, and other characteristics impacting the decision and action of consumers, farmers and all value chain actors in between. Taking the country of Kenya, the milling industrial sector and the maize supply chain together in a unique multi-tiered use case approach, this presentation will feature foundational principles and digital innovation frameworks for integrating data sharing, incentive and governance models that encourage value chain actors to target food convergence innovation while strengthening market accountability and transparency and contributing to the well being of the whole society. Presentation will address three key questions: How can digital traceability and sustainability mechanisms jointly enhance food quality governance?; What business and policy incentives are most likely to drive industry adoption and investment? How might these insights shape a regional model for sustainable, data-driven food systems? Panel will bring together scholars with technical and industry leaders engaged in the transformation and discuss challenges and possibilities in Kenya and transferability to other countries, industries and agricultural commodities in tracing pathways for traceability, sustainability, and finance to build resilient and competitive food systems.
