Takeaways from Office Hour with Karolina Nanowski

Speaking from experience, I have made a full 180 in my educational paths, multiple times, and there is no way I am the only one. Through the many Office Hours I have attended, I have finally gained peace in the fact that it is completely normal. Very few people know exactly what they want to do from young adulthood, and some still have not satisfied their inner flame at the age of 50.

February’s Office Hour host, Karolina Nanowski, included a gamut of lessons with embedded gems of advice to help Desautels students through their journey at McGill and beyond. She knew we needed it! In case you missed it, here are the key points brought up that may help guide and enhance your quest to find a career path that is right for you.

Karolina Nanowski, who is now the Account Director at Good Apple, was once a McGill undergraduate student looking to find her way. It was not easy, she admitted, but with the help of her own mentors and experiences, she persevered and is happy to introduce herself to the world as a marketing professional. Her exchange to Australia back in 2010 inspired her to pursue work in Australia after graduation. Fresh out of McGill, she worked on a creative marketing project for ANZ Bank that awarded her and her team a Cannes Lions award in 2016. This was a whole lot of recognition in the hands of a young twenty-some year old fresh out of Canada’s top university.

Despite her big win, Nanowski insisted on humility and humanity. Beyond her paid work, she is also passionate about volunteering and helping her community. DesautelsConnect’s opportunity was, therefore, right up her alley. With hardship comes success, and with success comes support for those who need it most. Karolina truly personifies this in her attempt to uplift young leaders.

Karolina’s longing to inspire others is admirable and inspiring in and of itself. Other than her wise advice, the marketing professional provides stepping stones for what it means to be human in a world where money rules all realms. With this, future generations will navigate with kindness, empathy, and compassion, which is a necessity in the trying times we have been fighting against these past few years.

Amanda Thomas is the DesautelsConnect Ambassador, and is pursuing her Bachelor of Commerce degree at the Desautels Faculty of Management.
