Thomas T. Nguyen

Dr. Thomas Nguyen is an Associate Professor and Director of Continuing Dental Education in the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences at McGill University. He is also the founder and Chair of the ITI Scholarship Center at McGill and previously served as Director of Predoctoral Periodontology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. A board-certified periodontist with over 16 years of clinical experience and a decade of academic leadership, Dr. Nguyen has trained and held academic roles at leading universities in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
Dr. Nguyen received his DMD from Université de Montréal and subsequently completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, an MSc in Dental Sciences at McGill University, and specialty training in Periodontology at the University of Minnesota. He also holds an MBA from the McGill–HEC Montréal Executive MBA program, complementing his clinical and academic background with expertise in leadership, strategy, and healthcare innovation. He is currently pursuing a DPhil in Evidence-Based Healthcare at the University of Oxford, with research focused on evidence synthesis in periodontology and oral health.
Dr. Nguyen is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. His academic contributions have been recognized through several awards and fellowships, including the American Academy of Periodontology Award for Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring in Periodontics, the Nevins Teaching and Clinical Research Fellowship, and the Institute for Teaching and Learning Fellowship from the AAP Foundation. He is also a recipient of the Basil G. Bibby Award and the Dr. E.T. and Mrs. Marjorie Bourke Award.
Dr. Nguyen’s clinical and research interests lie at the intersection of periodontology, implant dentistry, and emerging technologies. His work encompasses soft- and hard-tissue regeneration, evidence-based healthcare, and the integration of artificial intelligence into clinical practice and dental education.
Beyond his academic work, Dr. Nguyen contributes to national and provincial discussions on the responsible adoption and governance of artificial intelligence in dentistry. He serves on the Royal College of Dentists of Canada Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies and on the Board of Directors of the Ordre des dentistes du Québec, where he contributes to strategic planning and initiatives related to the evolution of dental practice.
