Machine Tool Lab (MD 056) Access Policy

Policy

Students need to obtain required training to access the Machine Tool Lab (MD 056). Training will be provided through training modules granting progressive access to use machines in the workshop under the technicians’ supervision. Students with DEP, DEC or any equivalent diploma from one of the recognized Canadian institutions can apply to have access to the workshop using the Request for Evaluation form.

Students and users who were granted access to the workshop have to sign the Faculty Workshop users’ rules (PDF), respect and abide by them. The procedures for Machining knowledge/experience Evaluation and Training MODULES are outlined in the Workshop Competence Assessment/Qualification Procedure. (PDF)

Machine User Training

The Faculty developed an in-house safety-training program that is comprised of three progressive modules, which provide gradual access to participants as they progresses in the training modules. Students and users are not allowed to use specific equipment unless proper training has been given on that equipment. Typically, the developed training focuses heavily on safety and avoiding potentially dangerous situations. This training program will enlarge the pool of students who already have access to use the machines in the workshop under the supervision of the technicians.

The training material covers the understanding of basic metrology and accurate measurements, the general concepts of machines and machining, the safe use of those machines, applying machining techniques and verifying the quality of work in addition to rules and regulations regarding health and safety. The training modules (TM) are: TM# 1 which covers metrology, basic hand tools, band saws and drill presses, TM# 2 which covers lathe machines and TM# 3 which covers milling machines. At the successful completion of a training module, students/participants should sign the faculty workshop users’ rules and regulation form before being allowed access to the workshop.

To register for the training module/s please open the PDF registration form file, make sure to complete all the required information, print the filled form, sign it and have it signed by the FOAPAL/fund controller, then e-mail it to the following e-mail address mgr-workshop.engineering [at] mcgill.ca. Once a request is submitted, you will receive a confirmation e-mail. Due to the limited number of available seats, students will be contacted based on a first-come first-serve basis, with priority given to design team members.

Qualifying Machine Users with DEP or DEC Diplomas

Students with a DEP or DEC diploma obtained from recognized Canadian institutions can have access to the Machine Tool Lab after a successful evaluation of their diploma, as per the Request for Evaluation procedure.

General working area access protocols

The students’ general working area in Macdonald Engineering building room #051 and Macdonald–Harrington building room# B15 are open for activities during normal working hours between 9am to 5pm on weekdays. The purpose of the protocols is to regulate access and activities in compliance with McGill rules and regulations as well as the guidance of CNESST, in order to ensure proper and safe area usage.

Please refer to Access Protocol for the Project Lab.

To access the Walk-in Fume Hood (Paint Booth) please refer to Protocol for use of Walk-in Fume Hood. Although the Walk-in Fume hood is suitable for paints and paint mists as well as for capturing and exhausting a wide variety of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) including solvents, glues, lacquers, thinners, fuels, and degreasers, only approved chemicals can be used. The pre-approved product list (PDF) is posted on the Walk-in Fume Hood and is available as well on the website.

Approval for any other product is possible by completing and sending the Chemical Request Form (PDF), along with the relevant MSDS of the product in an email to: mgr-workshop.engineering [at] mcgill.ca

(Feedback can be expected within 10 working days and the name of approved products will be added to the list of pre-approved products).
