Sponsored Borrower cards

A McGill faculty member may request borrowing privileges for print material at the McGill Libraries for individuals in the categories below.

The faculty member takes full responsibility for any library transactions conducted by the person being sponsored including the payment for any outstanding fine/fees associated when the account expires. Revoking privileges may be requested by the faculty member if the person leaves prior to expiration of the account. These are individual accounts and only the sponsored borrower has access to the account.

The Sponsored Borrower card does not provide remote access to electronic resources at the Libraries to those not already eligible, nor does it grant access to all services and resources at the Libraries.

To apply for a Sponsored Borrower Card:

Visiting scholars
  • Account category: Faculty Staff
  • A Department Chair, Associate Dean, or Dean must fill out a sponsored borrower form.
  • Alternatively, the visiting scholar may bring a letter from a McGill University Dean or Department Chair, stating the specific period that a visiting scholar is affiliated, to the Service Desk of the branch library that liaises with the department. Please note that the McGill Faculty, School, or Department will be responsible for any outstanding fees.
Visiting graduate students
Research Associate/Research Assistants not on McGill payroll working with a McGill Faculty member
Short term program participants
  • Account category: Undergraduate
  • A faculty member from the sponsoring program must provide a list of the participants to their branch library.
  • Once the sponsored borrower form has been completed by the McGill faculty member, the Sponsored Borrower will receive an email confirmation from library staff. The Sponsored Borrower should show this email to the service desk staff of the library selected on the form in order to complete their registration.

Notices for items due soon, holds, recalls and overdue fines are sent to you by email.  You will also receive an email if an item cannot be automatically renewed.

The reminder notices are meant to alert you that a borrowed item will be due soon.
