Please note that our PhD study rooms are strictly reserved for McGill PhD students who have already passed their comprehensive exams.
Assignment Priority Ranking
The Humanities and Social Sciences Library has 53 PhD study rooms, which can accommodate up to 87 PhD students.
All applications must be submitted using the online form. Spaces will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
Terms of Use
Students who do not respect the Terms of Use will be asked to return their study space key:
- Rooms are checked once a month for cleanliness.
- Students assigned a PhD room space are not entitled to a carrel or locker in the library.
- Students who have a carrel or a locker checked out to their libraries account must return their carrel or locker in order to be eligible for a PhD study room.
- It is the student’s responsibility to never allow unassigned individuals into their PhD study room.
- PhD study rooms are only available for use only during the library’s opening hours.
- All library material in your PhD study room must be checked out to your libraries account.
- All Libraries policies regarding recalls, holds, returns, and late fees must be respected.
- Books no longer needed should be placed in the Returns bin (Main Floor).
- Eating is not permitted. Beverages must be kept in mugs with closed lids.
- The Libraries are not responsible for lost or stolen property. Valuable personal belongings should not be kept in your PhD study room.
- Students are not permitted to move any furniture or equipment into their PhD study room.
- For safety reasons, students are not permitted to install posters or cover door windows.
- A fine of $30 will be charged for the late return of the key.
- A fee of $100 will be charged for the replacement of a lost key.
- All libraries policies and university codes of conduct must be respected.
