The information on this page applies to McGill faculty members.

Your Library Card

Your McGill ID card is your library card. You can use it to borrow items at self-serve kiosks, library Service Desks, and laptop lending machines in the McGill Libraries.

Faculty Research Card

McGill faculty members who need to borrow more than 100 library items to conduct their research and teaching activities may request a Faculty Research Card.

Granting Library Access to Other Patrons

Sponsored Borrowers

You may grant borrowing privileges to patrons in the following categories:

  • Visiting scholars
  • Visiting graduate students

  • Short term program participants

Please see the Sponsored Borrowers borrowing page for more information.

Faculty Spouses

As a faculty member, your spouse is eligible for a complimentary membership to the McGill Libraries. Please see the Faculty Spouse borrowing page for more information.

Your Library Account

Your library account allows you to:

  • View the library items (and Interlibrary Loans) that you have checked out and when they are due
  • Renew items
    • Please Note: regular loans will automatically renew if your account is in good standing and the item has not been requested/recalled.
  • View and pay overdue or recall fines
  • View the status of hold requests and cancel requests you no longer need

Access your library account

Sign in to your library account using your McGill username and password.

Proxy Borrower activity in your account

If you have authorized a proxy borrower, you can see all of your personal activity and activity carried out by your proxies in your library account. There is no distinction in your account between materials that were checked out by you and the materials checked out by your proxy borrower. To find out which items where checked out by a Proxy Borrower, please contact a library Service Desk.

Faculty Research Card accounts

If you have registered for a McGill Libraries Borrowing card as a Faculty Research Card, please note that your regular McGill borrowing account and your McGill Libraries Borrowing card are two separate accounts that are not connected to one another. Please see the Faculty Research Card page for information on how to access your Research Card account.

Email Notices

Notices for items due soon, holds, recalls and overdue fines are sent to you by email.  You will also receive an email if an item cannot be automatically renewed.

The reminder notices are meant to alert you that a borrowed item will be due soon.

Note: You are still responsible for returning items on time even if you do not receive the email notices. Please check your library account for up-to-date information.

All library notices are sent to your McGill email address.

Proxy Borrower Emails

If you have authorized a proxy borrower, certain email notifications regarding their borrowing activity will also be sent to you. Please see the Proxy Borrowers borrowing page for more detailed information.
