Book shelves in Mclennan

Project Summary

The Schulich Library Collection will need to be relocated due to the temporary, two-year closure and renovation of the Macdonald-Stewart Library Building. To make room for STEM materials and study furniture, the CJK Collection, Map Collection and other items will be shifted within the McLennan-Redpath Complex. Low circulating materials will move to dark storage.

Project description

Over the course of the Spring and Summer 2019 semesters, several collections including the collection of STEM materials housed in the Schulich Library of Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Engineering and the Chinese, Japanese, Korean (CJK) Collection located on the second floor of the McLennan Library Building, will be relocated to various areas of Humanities and Social Sciences Library in the McLennan-Redpath Complex. The goal of the move is to ensure that STEM materials are accessible during the temporary two-year closure and renovation of the Schulich Library of Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Engineering. The Schulich Library will formally CLOSE on May 15, 2019 and will reopen when the major structural repairs, masonry stabilization, HVAC system replacement and overall refurbishment is completed by the end of 2021.

The following collections are affected:

  • 250,000 low-use volumes from the Redpath Basement will move into “dark storage” at a secure storage facility in order to make room for the Schulich collection and the Chinese Japanese Korean (CJK) collection. McGill Library is working with Procurement, Campus Planning and Facilities Management to select a qualified company to pack, move and house the majority of Redpath Basement material for two years, which will be placed in dark storage. This low use material will not be accessible during this time. Should a title in dark storage be required it can be requested through McGill Interlibrary Loan service (ILL).
  • 160,000 Schulich Library volumes will move to the basement in the Redpath Library Building.
  • 87,000 Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) volumes will move from the second floor of McLennan Library Building to the basement of the Redpath Library Building.
  • The Map Collection on the second floor of the McLennan Library Building will be integrated into the Map Room on that same floor.

Please note that during spring/summer 2019, users will have limited access to certain materials and see increased traffic and noise in affected areas. Users looking to take out materials from the Schulich Collection are asked to do so before May 15, 2019.
