Interfaculty Transfers

Software Engineering and the Software Engineering co-op program will not be open for inter- or intra-faculty transfers for Fall 2021. Please consult with an academic advisor to plan accordingly – Book an appointment or undergradadministrator.ece [at] mcgill.ca (email )the department.

Application Dates

Winter: Closed
Fall: April 15 to May 15

Students in other faculty programs who would like to change their program are invited to apply as an inter-faculty transfer using the Minerva Faculty Transfer/Readmission electronic application.

Students applying must have been admissible as a freshman. Typically, the following requirements apply:

Minimum Prerequisites

  • One semester of differential calculus
  • One semester of integral calculus
  • One semester of linear algebra
  • Two semesters of physics (mechanics, electricity and magnetism, waves and optics) with labs
  • Two semesters of general Chemistry with labs

See the Undergraduate Admission Requirements page for additional details.

Preference will be given to students who have completed the degree’s Year 0 freshman science courses.

Please note, that while you are not an Engineering student, you will not be permitted to take Engineering Administered courses such as; (to name a few)

FACC 100, 300, 400
MATH 262, 263, 264
CCOM 206

You must plan your course schedule for the upcoming year inline with the program you are currently registered in as there is not a guarantee of getting into your program of choice.

While many applicants may meet the minimum requirements for a program transfer, there is limited enrolment/space in undergraduate degree programs in the Faculty of Engineering. Therefore, in order to ensure a transparent and equitable evaluation of each application, the following conditions are considered in the selection process:

Minimum Requirements

  • A minimum of one completed term of study at McGill is required in order to be considered for a transfer to an undergraduate program in the faculty.
  • A minimum CGPA based on McGill courses is required to apply:
    • 3.0 CGPA for the programs offered in the Department of Mining and Materials;
    • 3.3 CGPA for the programs offered in all other departments.
  • A minimum of 27 McGill graded credits (does not include S/U grades and does not include transfer credits) must be completed at the end of the current academic year (Fall and Winter terms) where at least one term comprises 15 credits or
  • at least 15 credits must be completed at the end of a winter term where it is the student’s term of admission or
  • at least 15 credits must be completed in the last term of registration where a student is on a co-op work term or McGill approved internship program.

Offers for program transfer will be made to students based on CGPA relative to the list of qualified applicants.

All results are taken into consideration in determining transfer offers, including failed or repeated courses. Admission is competitive and the minimum CGPA requirement does not guarantee acceptance.

CGPA CUT-OFFS

As a guideline, we have listed the lowest CGPA scores admitted to inter- and intrafaculty transfers over the last five years. These are historical values and do not necessarily reflect the CGPA that will be required for future transfers.

CGPA cut-offs can fluctuate up or down from one year to the next.

Before you apply:

  • Carefully read about the program you are interested in by browsing through their program flyers here
  • Consult the eCalendar for information about course requirements
  • Have you considered adding a minor instead of transferring programs? Consult our minors page
  • Speak with a career advisor; as they can help guide you in deciding which program can you lead you to your preferred career path. For career advice, Engineering students can visit https://www.mcgill.ca/careers4engineers/ while Non-Engineering students can visit https://www.mcgill.ca/caps/

How to apply for a Program Transfer or Readmission

A maximum of two program choices (e.g. Mechanical, Electrical; Civil) are permitted per application period. Students should enter their first and second preference.

  1. Login to Minerva using your McGill ID and PIN.
  2. Select the Student Menu.
  3. Select the Student Records Menu.
  4. Select Faculty Transfers / Readmission Menu.
  5. Follow the steps on the menu screen to proceed with the application you desire: Inter-Faculty Transfer, Intra-Faculty Transfer, or Readmission.
NOTE: Students applying to Architecture will be evaluated by the School of Architecture and should email mary.lanni [at] mcgill.ca (Mary Lanni Campoli), Student Adviser, School of Architecture regarding submission of their application and architecture portfolio.

Application Status

Students are required to verify on Minerva the status of their application often to determine whether any additional information is required and respond promptly.

Applications that remain incomplete two weeks following the application deadline will be refused.

Application Decision

Decisions will be processed anytime between mid-June up until end of July.  Students will receive an email notification when their status changes. Following a Faculty Approved status, it is mandatory that the student accept or decline the offer on the Minerva application. This must be done within two weeks of the change of status to avoid cancellation of the offer.

Accepted students are to read the letter of offer carefully as there may be further steps to complete before registration may begin.

Where an offer has been accepted, the student’s record will reflect the new program within a few days of acceptance. Once the new program appears on Minerva, the student may begin registering in the courses applicable to the new program.

Grades for McGill courses for which are required for your degree will be granted and will carry forward and calculate in your CGPA (cumulative grade point average) in the Faculty of Engineering; all other grades will be excluded from your CGPA.

New Program Advising

Academic advising is MANDATORY in the Faculty of Engineering.

The letter of offer on Minerva provides information to students on when to attend their departmental advising session.
