Faculty of Engineering Readmission

This information is for engineering students who:

  • are not currently registered and wish to be readmitted back into the Faculty of Engineering
  • wish to be readmitted and change Faculties (transfer).

For further conditions see:  http://www.mcgill.ca/students/transfer-readmission/

  • All programs are available to engineering students for readmission in both Fall and Winter terms. Students interested in applying for Fall term readmission may request to take courses in summer term and would apply for readmission to Summer term instead.  Summer term applications will be considered under the condition that the student is able to demonstrate, at the time of application, that they will be present to complete the course.  The selected course(s) must be included in the comments section of the Summer readmission application.
  • Students applying for readmission to Architecture are requested to confirm their application submission by emailing Mary Lanni Campoli, Student Adviser, School of Architecture.

Readmission following Academic Standing Decisions

The readmission/ returning status applies to students whose most recent academic standing is one of the following, and who would like to return to the Faculty of Engineering:

I. Students in Unsatisfactory Standing or Probationary Standing

This applies to students who wish to return to the Faculty of Engineering after a compulsory absence of a minimum of one term.

II. Students currently in Satisfactory Standing or Probationary Standing

This applies to students whose most recent academic standing is satisfactory or probationary and who wish to return to the Faculty of Engineering after an absence of one or more terms.

III. Readmit/Transfer

This applies to engineering students who are currently in good academic standing, would like to return to McGill University after an absence of one term or more, AND who wish to transfer programs.
The application will be treated as a transfer application and will be processed by means of the faculty transfer guidelines.  Students are to contact the future faculty for the program transfer requirements.

Documents Required:

  • Summary of Activities:  It is mandatory that all students who apply under the Readmission status must submit a summary of activities since last registered at McGill, using the comment section of the application form. Students who withdrew due to illness must ALSO provide a medical note from a physician stating that the student is ready and able to continue their studies.

  • A transcript of studies:  A student copy is acceptable (if any courses were studied elsewhere during the absence from the Faculty of Engineering) followed by an official transcript sent directly from the Host University to the address below. A Permanent Code* is required for Host Universities within Quebec:

c/o Readmission

McGill Engineering Student Centre, Student Affairs Office,
Faculty of Engineering, 3450 University Street, Suite 22,
Montreal, Quebec, H3A 0E8.

Unofficial copies are to be sent by email to:  Transfer.engineering [at] mcgill.ca and include the McGill student ID number.

Note:  Readmission decisions are made independently of registration holds. Registration will not be permitted until holds are cleared.

* Permanent Code: is a unique identifying code assigned by the provincial government to all students who attend an educational institution in Quebec and is required.  If you do not see it on your Minerva transcript, see the legal documents website for information on how to obtain a Permanent Code.

Application Status

Students are required to verify on Minerva the status of their application often to determine whether any additional information is required and respond promptly.

Applications that remain incomplete two weeks following the application deadline will be refused.

Application Decision

Students will receive an email notification when their status changes.  Following a Faculty Approved status, it is mandatory that the student accept or decline the offer on the Minerva application.  This must be done within three weeks of the change of status to avoid cancellation of the offer.

Where an offer has been accepted, the student’s record will reflect the new program within two weeks of acceptance.  Once the new program is reflected on Minerva, the student may begin registering in the courses applicable to the new program.

New Program Advising

Academic advising is mandatory in the Faculty of Engineering.  The letter of offer on Minerva provides information to students on when to attend their departmental advising session.

Faculty of Engineering Transfers

McGill students who have not completed their McGill degree may be considered for a program transfer to the Faculty of Engineering by applying on Minerva.  Students will fall into one of two categories below, and are required meet the program requirements as defined below.  It is recommended that students discuss their plan with an advisor prior to submitting an application.

Programs Available:

Fall Term:  Architecture, Bioengineering, Chemical, Civil, Electrical/Computer/Software, Mechanical, Mining/Materials

Winter Term: Applications are not available for this term

Application categories

Intra-Faculty Transfer:

This is open to current engineering students who would like to change their program/degree within the Faculty of Engineering.

Inter-Faculty Transfer:

This is open to current McGill students in an eligible faculty who would like to change their degree to one offered by the Faculty of Engineering.

Inter-faculty Transfer to the Faculty of Engineering

Students applying must have been admissible as a freshman. Typically, the following requirements apply:

Minimum Prerequisites:

  • One semester of differential calculus
  • One semester of integral calculus
  • One semester of linear algebra
  • Two semesters of physics (mechanics, electricity and magnetism, waves and optics) with labs
  • Two semesters of general Chemistry with labs

See the Undergraduate Admission Guide for additional details.

Preference will be given to students who have completed the degree’s Year 0 freshman science courses.

Intra-faculty Transfer to the Faculty of Engineering

Engineering students who would like to change their program are invited to apply as an intra-faculty transfer using The Minerva Faculty Transfer/Readmission form

  • Exception: Students who currently reside within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering or the Department of Mining and Materials Engineering, and wish to change their major within their department, are to contact their Departmental Advisor to discuss their intention.  The Minerva Faculty Transfer/Readmission form is not used for this type of request.  These program transfers are to be requested as follows:

Intra-Department Transfer applicants are to complete the following steps:

  1. Complete a Request for Course Authorization form which can be found within a department or at the McGill Engineering Student Centre, Frank Dawson Adams Building, Room 22;
  2. Meet with their departmental advisor for approval;
  3. Submit a completed form to the McGill Engineering Student Centre for processing.

Transfer Request Review Process

While many applicants may meet the minimum requirements for a program transfer, there is limited enrolment/space in undergraduate degree programs in the Faculty of Engineering. Therefore, in order to ensure a transparent and equitable evaluation of each application, the following conditions are considered in the selection process:

Minimum Requirements

  • A minimum of one completed term of study at McGill is required in order to be considered for a transfer to an undergraduate program in the faculty
  • A minimum CGPA of 3.0 is required to apply
  • A minimum of 27 graded credits must be completed at the end of the current academic year (Fall and Winter term) where at least one term comprises 15 credits or
  • at least 15 credits must be completed at the end of a winter term where it is the student’s term of admission or
  • at least 15 credits must be completed in the last term of registration where a student is on a co-op work term or McGill approved internship program.

After the review of all requirements and prerequisites, final selection will be based on excellent academic performance, measured by CGPA. Offers for available places will be made to selected students based on their position within the list of qualified applicants. All results are taken into consideration in determining admission, including those for failed or repeated courses. Admission is competitive and presentation of the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance.
