McGill-UQAC French Immersion Program

July 4 - August 5, 2022

The summer break is the perfect opportunity to improve your French language skills, increasing your chances of success in the Quebec job market!

The McGill Engineering Student Centre will be sponsoring up to 10 undergraduate and 10 graduate students to participate in this unique experiential learning opportunity, in partnership with the Deputy Provost for Student Life and Learning, Scholarships and Student Aid, International Student Services, and l’Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC).

Please note, the McGill-UQAC French Immersion Program is for International Students only. Canadian students may be eligible for funding to attend a French immersion intensive through the Explore Program.

Limited spaces are available and only applicants who pass the French placement test will be contacted.

Undergraduate Students

Program Eligibility:

  • Enrolled full-time as a McGill Undergraduate Student in Spring and Fall 2022
  • International students in satisfactory academic standing
  • Intermediate French Proficiency (a placement test will follow in late March with instructions)

Program Details:

  • 5-week experiential opportunity at the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi
  • 18 hours of French classes each week
  • Industry Site Visits (ex. Ubisoft, Rio Tinto)
  • All meals are included during the 5-week program.
  • Students stay with a host family and share on average 14 meals per week with the family.
  • For the other meals, the École de langue française gives students a meal card that includes 31 meals (24 lunches and 7 dinners). These meals will be served at the UQAC cafeteria.
  • At the start of the program, students sign a moral contract committing them to speak only French during the program.

Funding:

  • The total cost of this program is $4335.12
  • Accepted students receive a $3,000 award to participate in the spring or summer program
  • Accepted students facing financial barriers may apply for to the Enriched Educational Opportunity (EEO) Bursary program to help defray additional coasts. Visit the SSAO website for more information about the EEO Bursary Program details, how to apply, student eligibility, etc.
  • Accepted students who do not meet the eligibility criteria for the EEO Bursary Program, may apply to MESC for additional funding by filling out this form.

Graduate Students

Program Eligibility:

  • Enrolled full-time as a McGill Graduate Student in Spring and Fall 2022
  • International students in satisfactory academic standing
  • Intermediate French Proficiency (a placement test will follow in mid-April with instructions)

Program Details:

  • Applications will choose their preference of program run by the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi (UQAC):
    • 3 week in-person program (at UQAC) - July 4-22, 2022
    • 3 week online program - cancelled
    • 5 week in-person program (at UQAC) - July 4-August 5, 2022
    • 5 week online program - cancelled
  • Up to 18 hours of French classes each week
  • At the start of the program, students sign a moral contract committing them to speak only French during the program.
  • Those choosing the in-person option will have all meals provided and will stay with a host family and share on average 14 meals per week with the family. For the other meals, the École de langue française gives students a meal card that includes 31 meals (24 lunches and 7 dinners). These meals will be served at the UQAC cafeteria.

Funding:

  • Accepted students will receive a full scholarship to attend their choice of online or in-person program through the Empower Initiative.
