Student Supports- First Peoples' House

First Peoples’ House

McGill's First Peoples' House (FPH) aims to provide First Nations, Inuit and Métis students attending McGill with a "home away from home," where they can find support and encouragement to succeed in their studies and remain connected to their culture. It offers academic, financial, social, and logistical support to students to help them succeed in their studies. The First Peoples’ House is a part of McGill Student Services.

"We are dedicated to providing support for Indigenous students at McGill by establishing a sense of community and being the first point of contact to help students with any questions or needs."

Wellness and Cultural Programming

The First Peoples' House is McGill's hub for Indigenous cultural, social and spiritual activities for the university community, including:

  • Weekly activities aimed at Indigenous students (e.g. Beading and Drumming Workshops, Soup and Bannock)
  • The annual Pow Wow organized by the First Peoples' House, which is open to the public
  • Indigenous Awareness Week, held concurrently with the Pow Wow, which features a program of lectures, panel discussions, Indigenous film screenings, and traditional workshops to raise awareness of Indigenous peoples and celebrate Indigenous cultures within the university community.

See the First Peoples' House website, including their Community and Cultural support page, for more information.

Visit Educational Resources to learn about Indigenous Awareness Weeks.

Indigenous Spaces on Campus

Indigenous students have access to dedicated study/meeting spaces at the First Peoples’ House (3505 Peel St.), and in the School of Social Work (3506 University St., Suite 300) and the Office of First Nations & Inuit Education (3700 McTavish St., Room 244). The First Peoples’ House is the best equipped place with a kitchen, four computers and printer, a conference room and study rooms. The other locations are equipped with computers, desks, microwaves and isolated work spaces.

The First Peoples' House has single residence rooms that are rented on a renewable basis each year. These rooms are rented primarily to Indigenous students and provide access to all McGill residence services.
