CÉGEP Orientation and Research in Engineering (CORE) is a 10-week paid summer experience for Indigenous and Black CÉGEP students in the Greater Montreal Area. CORE interns will be matched with a Faculty of Engineering professor to work on a research project over the summer. Interns will also participate in mentorship and community events that support their learning about university experiences and possible careers in the engineering, architecture, and urban planning disciplines.

Information for CÉGEP students
Program offerings
- $6,500 stipend for the summer (June–August)
- Full-time (Mon–Fri) summer research project supervised by a Faculty of Engineering professor
- Mentoring relationship with a graduate and/or postdoctoral student
- Access to a shared communication platform for exchange between members of the CORE community
- Three CORE community gatherings:
- June: Welcome, campus orientation, strategies and tips for a positive summer research experience
- July: Group check-in, sharing experiences, exploring community resources
- August: Summer wrap-up and reflections, interactive mapping of program experiences and impacts
- Optional participation in skill-building workshops and community events throughout the summer
- Optional participation in the Office of E-IDEA Annual Student Showcase (September)

Eligibility
- Self-identify as Indigenous and/or Black
- Registered as a CÉGEP student in the Greater Montreal Area
- Available to commit to all CORE program offerings, including in-person research and community activities

Key dates

- Submission of Undergraduate Research Trainee (UGRT) registration form: April 2027 (tentative)
Eligibility
- Must be a professor within the Faculty of Engineering
- Able to assign at least one HQP (e.g., graduate student, postdoctoral researcher) who will work closely with the CORE intern and provide guidance and mentorship over the summer. Name(s) of HQP must be identified within the project submission form.
- Able to commit to the cost-sharing breakdown below:
- $5,000 contributed by the Faculty of Engineering
- $1,500 contributed by the supervising professor
- Able to ensure reasonable research working hours. CORE placements are full-time positions (35 hours per week) for 10 weeks from June to August. All CORE interns are expected to participate in monthly community meetups hosted by the Office of E-IDEA. Research supervisors are encouraged to accommodate reasonable requests to participate in additional workshops and community events supporting CORE interns’ exposure to the Faculty of Engineering environment. A vacation request may be accommodated if not in conflict with any CORE events and if the student will make up the missed time. Research supervisors are encouraged to incorporate hybrid work where possible.
