EDI Strategic Priorities 2025 - 2030

Building on McGill University's  EDI Strategic Plan, the Action Plan to Address Anti-Black Racism, and 52 Calls to Action essential to Truth and Reconciliation, the Faculty of Engineering works to realize the following EDI Strategic Priorities. Each Department and School is mandated with creating and implementing a unit-specific EDI strategy aligned with these strategic priorities. The Faculty of Engineering commits to reporting on progress and outcomes from this work.

  1. Recruitment and Retention

The Faculty of Engineering works to advance EDI in all aspects of the academic and administrative staff life cycles, including recruitment, hiring, retention, mentorship, and recognition. Specific measures include mandatory EDI training for hiring committees and other decision-making roles, enforcing recruitment strategies to attract diverse applicants, setting targets for hiring professors and faculty lecturers from underrepresented groups, and reporting on faculty demographics.

  2. EDI Education and Advocacy

The Faculty of Engineering will integrate principles of EDI into academic research culture and the employee work environment. One objective is to support principal investigators in applying an EDI lens to their research sphere, including research proposals and grants, recruitment and training of highly qualified personnel, team management and recognition, professional networking, and conference organization. Through the EDI Advocacy Program (a Community of Practice for academic and administrative staff), we will grow and support a culture of people who are committed to creating a more inclusive working and learning environment in the Faculty of Engineering.

  3. Student Experience

By integrating EDI content into students’ educational experience and developing performance measures with respect to skills development, we support students’ understanding and practical applications of EDI in the context of engineering and design. The Teamwork Program integrates interpersonal skills development into engineering education through workshops, coaching, advising, and resources. The  Community Engagement Program offers two-way experiential engagement opportunities between McGill Engineering students and local youth while building a solid foundation for applied EDI.

  4. Communication, Consultation, and Engagement

We enhance visibility, communication, and engagement related to the Faculty’s EDI initiatives by building relationships with staff collaborators and student groups, external stakeholders, as well as developing a robust strategy for website, social media, and newsletter content. We will develop protocols for ethical and meaningful community consultation with and engagement of historically marginalized groups.

  5. Accountability

We hold ourselves accountable to our commitment to inclusion through clear and timely processes, data collection, evaluation, and transparent reporting to the Faculty of Engineering communities on our progress on advancing our Strategic Priorities.
