The IEEE Photonics Society Engineering Achievement Award is given to recognize an exceptional engineering contribution which has had a significant impact on the development of laser or electro-optic technology or the commercial application of technology within the past 10 years. It may be given to an individual or to a group for a single contribution of significant work in the field. No candidate shall have previously received a major IEEE award for the same work.

ECE Student Jhelum Chakravorty, was awarded the Best Student Paper Award at the 6th IFAC Workshop on Distributed Estimation and Control in Networked Systems (NecSys 2016) for her paper "Remote-state estimation with packet drop". This award is given on originality, clarity, and potential impact on practical applications or theoretical foundations of estimation and control in networked systems. ECE Student Awarded at the IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems
ECE student Ali Hashemi won second place in the Best Student Paper Award contest at the IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS 2016) for his paper "Matrix Reordering for Efficient List Sphere Decoding of Polar Codes". ISCAS is the flagship conference of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, with 1687 submitted papers and 781 accepted papers.
