McGill is a diverse institution with research activities spanning two campuses, 10 Faculties, 16 Schools, multiple hospitals, research centres, and institutes. It is home to more than 1,700 tenured or tenure-track faculty members.
As such, it is the University’s role to take responsibility for the environmental, economic, and social implications of its research. It is a core commitment within the McGill Strategic Research Plan.
Almost a quarter of McGill faculty members are engaged in sustainability research.
McGill Sustainability Systems Initiative
From 2017 to 2025, the MSSI provided funding to support bold and innovative research projects that addressed sustainability challenges and built McGill’s capacity for collaborative research. Its mandate now complete, the networks, programs, and important lessons learned from the initiative will help inform the development of a new Academic Strategic Plan for the McGill Sustainability Park.
