Welcome to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Research Ethics Board (McGill IRB)

The Research Ethics Board of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (McGill IRB) is a registered University Research Ethics Board that works in accordance with the published guidelines of the Tri-Council Policy Statement, the Cadre de référence ministériel pour la recherche avec des participants humains (MSSS, 2020) and the Food and Drugs Act (17 June 2001). The McGill IRB acts in accordance with the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations that govern research on human participants. The McGill IRB working procedures are consistent with internationally accepted principles of good clinical practice. Deliberations of the Committee must conform with applicable laws, including, where relevant, the Quebec Civil Code and the Loi sur les services de santé et les services sociaux des établissements.

The Minister of Health and Social Services has designated the McGill IRB to carry out the review, approval and follow-up for research to be conducted with children and cognitively impaired individuals as referred to in Article 21 of the Civil Code of the Province of Quebec.

The McGill IRB promotes the highest level of scholarly and ethical conduct in research involving human participants carried out by Faculty, staff and students on campus, off campus and/or in more than one of its affiliated hospitals, by:

  • Facilitating the review process through guidance and support to the researchers in the preparation and submission of their proposals;
  • Developing and implementing policies and procedures that ensure research compliance with provincial, national and international guidelines;
  • Promoting education and ongoing training for researchers and IRB members
