Biography

Jane Matthews Glenn joined the Faculty of Law in 1971 following doctoral studies at the Université de Strasbourg, and was jointly appointed to the School of Urban Planning the following year. She became an Associate Member of the McGill School of Environment in 2001. Over the years, Professor Glenn taught in the general area of property law (real and personal property, equity and trusts, landlord and tenant, and land use planning) as well as international development law; and she taught in McGill’s Barbados Fall Field Semester from 2003 to 2008.

Since her appointment as Emeritus Professor in 2008, Professor Glenn has maintained an active research agenda in her teaching areas, as well as in agricultural law, environmental law and land tenure issues in Canada and in Caribbean basin countries. Current research focuses on the right to housing as an example of economic and social rights in Canada, access to water in situ, and mixed jurisdictions in the Commonwealth Caribbean.

Professor Glenn is a member of a Montréal inter-university research group on urbanization and development which received Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) funding during the 1990s and 2000s for institutional development and research activities in selected Caribbean basin countries. She was elected as Associate Member of the International Academy of Comparative Law in 1995, and is currently Vice-President for North America, Central America and the Caribbean of the Union mondiale des agraristes universitaires (UMAU).

Professor Glenn has been a visiting scholar at the Swiss Institute of Comparative Law (1985-1986), the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, Mexico (1995-1996), the Max-Planck-Institut für Ausländishes und Internationales Privatrecht (2003-2004), the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies (2010-2011), and the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Studies, South Africa (2013). She was awarded a Visiting Fellowship at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, in 2002-2003. She served as President of the Association québécoise des professeurs de droit in 1991-1992.
