Biography

Dr Jonathan Chan is an Assistant Professor at McGill University’s Faculty of Law. His research and teaching interests lie in corporate law and securities regulation.

Professor Chan’s work on capital markets regulation has examined the appropriateness of self-regulation, comparatively analyzed listing regimes in North America, the UK, and Europe, and investigated how stock exchange rules evolve. His research also explores contemporary issues in mergers & acquisitions (M&A) and corporate governance. Most recently, he has published articles that examine appropriate legal remedies in failed M&A transactions and the effectiveness of different corporate law rule-making bodies. Professor Chan’s work employs both doctrinal and empirical methodologies.

Professor Chan has presented his research widely in North America, the UK, and Europe. His work has been published (or is forthcoming) internationally in leading academic journals, including the European Business Organization Law Review, European Company and Financial Law Review, Journal of Corporate Law Studies, The Canadian Bar Review, and Yale Journal on Regulation Bulletin.

Prior to joining McGill, Professor Chan was a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at University College London (UCL) Faculty of Laws. His prior teaching at UCL and the University of Oxford included courses such as Cross-Border M&A, Comparative Corporate Governance, Corporate Finance Law, and Principles of Financial Regulation.

Professor Chan holds a DPhil in Law from the University of Oxford, supported by a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship Award. He also holds a JD from the University of Toronto and is called to the Bar of Ontario. Before embarking upon an academic career, Professor Chan practised law in M&A and securities with Goodmans LLP in Toronto.
