Site Overview
Video: Côte des Neiges Overview
The CLSC de Côte-des-Neiges was established in 1975 and became a McGill Family Medicine teaching site (FMU) in 1986. Renowned for its innovative approach to healthcare, the CLSC has pioneered several key initiatives. It established the first and only Maison de Naissance, a birthing center staffed exclusively by midwives, and it is home to the PRAIDA and CDAR (Clinique des Demandeurs d'Asile et des Réfugiés) clinics, the only clinics in Quebec dedicated to providing comprehensive care exclusively for refugees and asylum seekers in the Greater Montreal area.
In 1991, a new, independent teaching unit was created within the CLSC de Côte-des-Neiges to meet the growing demand for family medicine training. Starting with just eight residents, the unit has since grown significantly. By 2018, the FMU had evolved into a University Family Medicine Group (U-FMG), expanding to 24 residents and 24 clerks. The facility also introduced a new care model at La Maison Bleue, aimed at supporting vulnerable pregnant women through a holistic, interdisciplinary approach that integrates prenatal, obstetric, pediatric, and social services.
The site offers a diverse clinical learning environment, exposing residents and students to a wide range of patients from various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. As one of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in Montreal, Côte-des-Neiges allows trainees to gain invaluable experience working with immigrant populations, refugees, and asylum seekers, many of whom present complex medical and social challenges. This rich clinical exposure prepares residents for a broad spectrum of health care situations, equipping them with the skills needed to practice compassionate, community-based family medicine.

Facilities and Resources
The Côte-des-Neiges Family Medicine Unit (FMU) is located on the first floor of the CLSC de Côte-des-Neiges. The clinic is equipped with two supervision rooms to facilitate training and patient care. Since 2016, the clinic has utilized the MYLE electronic medical record (EMR) system.
On the second floor, the administrative offices, teaching rooms, and a dedicated residents' and students' lounge provide a comfortable space for learning and collaboration. These facilities support the mission of offering top-tier family medicine training and fostering a collaborative environment for residents and medical students.
Teaching
We provide family medicine training programs, including clerkships, urban family medicine residencies, and specialized rotations at Maison Bleue and the CDAR clinic, focusing on obstetric care and care for refugees and asylum seekers. The unit also serves as a clinical site for the third-year perinatal program. Facilities include a minor surgery room and an emergency room, with close access to the Jewish General Hospital for hospital rotations.

Students also participate in addiction treatment at the Centre de Réadaptation en Dépendance de Montréal.
- Learning Opportunities: Clerks are integrated into vaccination clinics, mental health care, Practice-Based Small Group Learning (PBSGL) sessions, as well Journal Club discussions, during which they present research articles. They also participate in academic half-days alongside residents, learning from expert-led lectures.
Community and Engagement
The Côte-des-Neiges district is distinguished by its cultural diversity, predominantly composed of immigrant and refugee populations. Residents are consistently exposed to a wide range of medical conditions across all ages, with many cases considered complex due to the vulnerable nature of the clinic’s clientele. This includes many refugees and asylum seekers, whose healthcare needs require specialized attention.
The clinic offers residents valuable experience in managing immigrant health and addressing the unique challenges of multicultural healthcare. Throughout their training, residents work closely with social workers and other community resources, gaining a deep understanding of the socioeconomic factors that affect patient care. By the time they graduate, residents are well-prepared to handle a wide variety of medical and social issues in diverse populations.
