The Family Medicine Unit (FMU) has evolved from a rural site with 2 residents to a U-FMG, accommodating 34 residents at a time. The heart of the Outaouais campus, the U-FMG continues to evolve and develop.
During their training, residents follow their own patients at the FMU. Each resident is accompanied by an academic advisor who discusses the orientation of their residency, their assessments, and so on. Thanks to our horizontalized program, residents can experience true immersion in family medicine from the outset, with training environments that reflect real-life practice conditions.
Housed in modern, functional premises at the new Outaouais Campus, the U-FMG serves over 23 000 patients with a wide variety of clinical cases in a user-friendly, fully computerized environment. Supported by a multidisciplinary team of 30 supervising physicians, as well as nurse clinicians, nursing assistants, psychologists, specialized nurse practitioners, nutritionists, social workers, physiotherapists and pharmacists, our residents work in an interdisciplinary environment where collaboration with physicians and other professionals is a given, and the learning supports are robust.
What's more, the U-FMG is an innovative environment, where research and quality improvement projects are continually underway, and a team of user-partners is integrated to optimize practices.
Highlights
With over 60 examination rooms, 2 procedure rooms, and specialized clinics in musculoskeletal injuries, gynecology, early childhood, and psychiatry, everything is in place to ensure the best possible training. The clinic’s 6 supervision rooms feature an integrated camera system, allowing learners to be monitored in real time as they work and learn. On the inpatient side, the teaching unit is fortunate to have a nurse clinician who works closely with the medical staff supervisors to deliver teaching focused on excellence and interprofessional collaboration. Staff are also involved in teaching-related improvement projects.

Teaching
Training programs offered
- The McGill Outaouais campus, in collaboration with the U-FMG and the hospital-based Family Medicine Unit, offers a complete 4-year undergraduate medical program and a postgraduate residency program. At the undergraduate level, first-year students complete the Longitudinal Family Medicine Experience (LFME) at the Outaouais campus, as well as clinical observation rotations. In the second year, students complete the Transition to Clinical Practice (TCP) program, which combines studies and clinical internships in various settings. Third- and fourth-year students complete several clinical internships, also in various settings.
The U-FMG then offers up to 17 places per year for medical residents, in a dynamic clinic with 30 family physicians, a large team of professionals, and a rigorous and varied learning environment, both in terms of rotations (hospital, rural, specialized clinics) and stimulating teaching activities, integrating OSCEs, simulation, and more.
Types of learning experiences
- The U-FMG offers a number of specialized clinics, including minor procedures, MSK, gynecology, parent-child, and pre- and post-natal visits.
