Video: La Vallée-de-l’Or U-FMG Overview

The Vallée-de-l’Or U-FMG is a teaching unit for family medicine residents, affiliated with McGill University. It opened its doors in 2009, the result of many years of work by a number of physicians who saw it as a highly stimulating challenge. At the time, the Centre de santé et de services sociaux de Val-d'Or had already been receiving trainees from McGill University for several years, so the McGill affiliation came naturally.

A dozen family doctors were involved from the outset — a third of the active members at the Val-d'Or site — and almost all of them are still involved. Their passion for and love of teaching make them a team entirely dedicated to their learners. In addition, the milieu’s small size encourages learning by enabling a privileged resident–teacher relationship.

Highlights

  • Teaches the principles and practice of family medicine to students and residents.
  • Trains residents to become family physicians in accordance with the principles of the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
  • Promotes the professional development of family medicine teachers, as well as the continuing medical education of practicing family physicians.
  • Provides quality patient care within the context of family and community.
  • Serves the community through the activities of clinical faculty, residents and students in a variety of settings.

Family doctors cover emergency, hospitalization and obstetrics, supported by a fine team of specialists. Residents quickly find their place within the hospital's various care teams. In addition, the regional service provided by the Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux (CISSS) de l'Abitibi-Témiscamingue brings family medicine to life, as residents often get to see the same patients in the emergency department, on the wards or in the clinic:

  • 88 short-term beds
  • 36 500 outpatient consultations per year
  • approximately 700 deliveries per year
  • 38 300 emergency room visits per year

Facilities and Resources

  • Facilities: In the fall of 2024, the U-FMG moved into a brand-new building near the hospital. The purpose behind the move was to situate the U-FMG at the heart of the community and, in so doing, encourage residents to immerse themselves in a learning environment that reflects current medical practice.

Teaching

Training programs offered

  • Postgraduate program:
    • The family medicine residency program at the Vallée-de-l'Or U-FMG is grounded in versatility, autonomy, innovation, and a convivial atmosphere. Through the horizontalization of rotations, it offers residents a unique global integration of skills over 2 years, reflecting as closely as possible the reality of a family doctor's work in the region.
    • Residents, under the supervision of teaching physicians, follow their own clientele throughout their two-year residency. Each resident is paired with an academic advisor, who accompanies them throughout the program.
  • Undergraduate program:
    • Since 2023-2024, Val-d’Or has offered an integrated longitudinal clerkship program — a programme d’externat longitudinal intégré (ELI)— to McGill University medical students as part of their 3rd academic year. Whereas the traditional clerkship is based on various internships in urban environments, including a six-week stay in rural milieux, the integrated longitudinal (ELI) clerkship offers exposure to medical practice outside the major centres and focuses on the needs of local populations.

Community and Engagement

The Vallée-de-l'Or regional county municipality (RCM) cover 24,000 km2 and serves a population of around 43 000, spread over six municipalities (Val-d'Or, Senneterre-ville, Senneterre-paroisse, Malartic, Rivière-Héva, Belcourt), one First Nations reserve (Lac Simon) and the Grand Lac Victoria Indian Settlement (Kitcisakik). Just over 4% of the total population is Indigenous. The inhabitants of Lac Simon speak French for the most part, while English is widely spoken in Kitcisakik.
