Site Overview
Video: Parc-Extension U-FMG Overview
The academic site was created in 2014 in the Parc-Extension CLSC with 2 family medicine residents initially. The unit now has 12 residents in addition to some 12 medical students who rotate through each year. The clinic provides a range of medical and social services, including family physicians, pediatricians, psychotherapists, nurses and nurse practitioners, pharmacists, nutritionists, social workers, and so on.
The clinic is situated at the heart of one of the most densely populated and underprivileged neighborhoods on the island of Montreal, an area known for its rich cultural diversity — over half the residents are from immigrant or visible minority backgrounds (Greece 37%, India 28%, Bangladesh 18% and Pakistan 18%). As a result of this diversity, almost 70% of inhabitants have a mother tongue other than French or English.
Highlights
The great cultural diversity of our patient population enriches the environment, and is a source of pride for the professionals who work at Parc-Extension. Since the 1990s, Parc-Extension has been home to some one hundred groups from as many cultural communities, and at least forty mother tongues other than French and English. Immigrants account for 58% of the neighborhood's population, compared with 31% in Montreal generally.
