Site Overview
Located next to the magnificent Lachine Canal, the MedNam clinic was established in 2015 in Lachine, when it was still one of Montreal's major underserviced municipalities. The family medicine group (FMG) has since grown significantly, having recruited over 30 family doctors and registered over 25,000 patients. It's an excellent example of how new clinics can adapt and evolve to meet the healthcare needs of their communities.
In 2018, MedNam added a satellite site (Cité Médicale Lachine) and became a Network FMG, offering urgent care visits to its patients and the wider community all 365 days of the year. In 2022, to meet ministerial requirements, the clinic's physicians proposed to collectively register and care for over 12,000 orphan patients.
Since it started receiving McGill University’s clerks during their family medicine rotations in January 2021, MedNam has worked hard to develop a teaching culture, and welcomed its first two residents in July 2023.
Unique features
- As an FMG (a Family Medicine Group), MedNam's physicians work closely with many health care professionals, including nursing assistants, nurse clinicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, social workers, a nutritionist, a kinesiologist, a physiotherapist, an ergotherapist and more.
- MedNam offers specialty clinics such as Pap test clinics, women’s health clinics, procedure clinics, CNESST clinics, sports medicine clinics, dermatology clinics and obstetrical follow-ups.
- MedNam is composed of a dynamic team of young family doctors who have diverse interests outside the clinic — from emergency medicine, obstetrics and hospitalization to home care, long-term care, and palliative care.
- As a Network FMG, MedNam has a large walk-in clinic that welcomes patients from all over Montreal, from diverse backgrounds (at times, including refugees).
- As a small and new teaching site, we are very responsive to the feedback of our learners, as our goal is to offer the best experience possible.
Facilities and Resources
- Facilities: U-FMG MedNam is composed of two different sites located one block away from each other: Cité Médicale Lachine (where most of the teaching will be taking place) and Clinique MedNam (the walk-in center). As a smaller site, we offer a great learner-to-supervisor ratio (with learners occasionally working one-on-one with the staff), which allows for a more intimate and personalized experience. We also ensure that when there is more than one learner, the schedule is staggered to avoid revision congestion.
- Technology and Resources: We have a supervision camera installed in each exam room assigned to learners at Cité Médicale Lachine, which allows the supervisor to give better feedback on the learner’s approach. PoCUS (point of care ultrasound) is available.
Teaching
- Training programs offered
- UGME (Clerkship core family medicine rotation and family medicine electives):
- Students assigned to MedNam will get to experience family medicine in a comprehensive and continuous manner by delivering primary care in different situations such as seeing follow-ups and doing walk-in. Depending on what is available during their rotation, they will also get to participate in specialized clinics (like women’s health and procedures) and will care for patients in other contexts in the community (CHSLD, home care and/or CLSC).
- Students will also get to observe how some allied health professionals work, to better understand the realities of their practice and learn how family physicians can collaborate with them.
- PGME (Family Medicine residency):
- U-FMG MedNam officially started accepting residents in July 2023, and will progressively increase their annual cohort to six.
- Our curriculum is horizontal, and follows the learning program of the Department of Family Medicine. Residents maintain a family practice by following a roster of approximately 150 patients over the course of their two years of residency. They return to MedNam one half-day per week throughout their residency, with additional clinics during their Family Medicine Rotations, to longitudinally follow their patients.
- Core rotations are grouped according to domains of clinical care, and cycle through several clinical settings: Lachine Hospital for ER, Hospitalist medicine and Palliative care, Lasalle Hospital for Obstetrics and Douglas Hospital for Mental Health. The Geriatrics rotation takes place in several sites: notably, the local long-term care centre (CHSLD) and the rehabilitation center at Ste. Anne's Hospital, as well as other hospitals, residences, and patients’ homes. Because Lachine and Lasalle Hospital are community hospitals, MedNam residents experience the breadth of practice for family physicians in community hospitals; they work in ERs, wards and delivery rooms managed by family physicians, where there are fewer specialists.
- In contrast to other McGill Montreal sites, the Family Medicine rotations at U-FMG MedNam offer longitudinalized parent-child and procedural experiences over the course of the program. This allows residents to maintain and perfect their more specialized skills throughout the two years of residency. Long-term care and home care are also integrated in the Family Medicine rotations to reflect the reality of the practice of family medicine with Quebec’s aging population.
- Academic Half-Days are organized with St-Mary’s Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth family medicine group, with smaller teaching activities organized locally.
- As residents approach graduation, a great deal of care is put into supporting the transition to practice, with increased focus on practice management, navigating the intricacies of the Quebec healthcare system, and billing.
- Types of learning experiences
- All learners at MedNam experience continuity of care clinics, urgent care and the walk-in. At MedNam. family physicians also run specialty clinics, including women's health, procedures and injections, dermatology, sports medicine, and CNESST clinics. Outside of clinic, learners will get to care for patients in long-term care, at home, and at the local community services centre (CLSC).

As a resident, I am thrilled to be part of such an innovative and forward-thinking clinic. From the moment I joined the team, it was evident that this is a place where new ideas are not just welcomed but actively encouraged.
